New person

Post by Del » 06 May 2010 08:38 pm

Name is Del, from Bexleyheath Kent and just looking around the forum really.

My mate has a 340 and got really interested in it when I saw it going sideways and loved the way it looked.

Always been a Ford guy, having only ever driven Ford escorts, my current car being this:

But now tired of this car and looking for something a bit different, i.e. a 340 of some description.

Bad thing is, I only have about £500 to spend on the new car and can't find any decent ones near me. Any help apprectiated.

Oh, and Hello.

Welcome in Del.
Blue oval carries money even it shitter form. Conversley-
£500 gets you a lot of car in volvo 300 land. have a scout.
Theres plenty out there and lots of links in the for sale section here.

remember, you dont need mega powers, or a minter of you just want to slide.

1.4 plus rain equals fun.

Cheers mate.

Yeh I'm not THAT bothered about how the car looks at the moment. And a 1.4 would actually be better for me because my current car is a 1.8 and the insurance and fuel costs are really hurting. Especially now i'm on VERY low wages.

Sideways fun and being able to not care TOO much about the car all the time would be great. Also my girlfriend lives in Harrow so I need something reliable and good on a motorway.

Been looking on here, ebay, pistonheads, auto trader and driftworks.com and still not found anything. But then I don't really know exactly what I am looking for.

Really wanted to sort this all out by the end of the month as my HUGE insurance bill comes through soon :(

well shoot for a 1.4 man. The b14s are bulletproof (litterally) and low tax. Carbs are the best of the lot too and timing chain for added forgetability.
Mpgs on all 300s is pretty poor, theyre detuned from factory for reliability so horses and mpg are a sacrifice for always starting and always getting you there.
try and get a scabby one, as minters are worth keeping mint and the influx of sliders is eating them all up.
Strip, rattlecan, bored=fail.
Happens every day so a LOT come up for sale. Yoy can still get a good un for wheel money:
3dr 1.4 £350 cheapness

theres lots of help here on upgrading, parts, lowering etc, BUT more and more people are buying cheap, getting bored and selling high, so try a forum search before askins qs mate. Pretty much Everything has been asked and answered a million times before.

We're all helpfull and friendly, and I hope you stick around man.
300s are without doubt the cheapest and best rwd your pennies will get you.

Welcome Del, tidy looking Escort you have there.

As said above it sounds like a 1.4 that's clean but not immaculate will suit you perfectly. You'll find them a lot more comfy than the Ford (I'm showing my age with that statement!) and it'll certainly grown on you. It's also reassuring to know you've got this friendly, knowledgeable 300 community available to you too :)

Welcome aboard mate, that Escorts very tidy! Not usually a fan of the MK5/6 is it? But i'd definately take a second glance at that! 8)

As others have said, the 1.4 sounds the best route to go for you, I've got one and after I think having a few years of neglect i'm slowly getting it sorted and it's now becoming quite a reliable little car 8)

This week i've been doing 60mile round trips just for work each day and cruising about 60mph along the motorway i'm getting about 140mile to £20 just to give you some idea of the MPG. That's with the carb tuned by me too so you could probably get more with it properly tuned! Either way it'll happily sit at that speed all day too with no problems whatsoever!

The one thing i've always loved about these cars is how realitvely easy they are to work on! Couple of the links posted above look to have some promising ones for sale! They're out there when you know what your looking for :)

Good luck with getting one dude! :340:

Nice escort! Always not been a great fan of the late ones until my friend bought an RS 2000 in black. Very nice car that and identical in power and gear ratios to my valver. Think it uses a redtop.

Cheers guys. Looks like i'll be keeping hold of the escort a little longer, and looking for a decent 300 in the future. Got some problems with jobs etc but as soon as I sort out a good one, I plan on getting in a volvo :)
