4 years in storage , what’s the market rate?

Post by andy_h » 16 Jul 2020 05:41 pm

It’s been a hell of a long time on here and hello! I know this forums is quiet now everybody uses the Facebook group . I’m off there now so guessing the hard core are still here?

I’m seeing what the market is at the moment for a 64k black saloon would be with and without MOT.

I got mine running as expected all good there ,but the sills have had the moisture get to them in my workshop so will need doing.

It’s lowered on blocks and landy shocks on back and lowering springs standard shocks on the front.
I have all the original shocks and springs to turn it back.

I put a full stainless exhaust system on it from the manifold down pipe with a new non stainless manifold section .

The bodywork is in pretty good condition considering. A few minor dings and rust patches around the arches .

I’ll get some pictures up tomorrow once I’ve cleaned it up .

I know there’s none for sale so going to be interesting to see what people will pay.

Values are all over the place from £1000 to 6-7k for a low mileage minter.

Either way you'll do much better if the car has MOT, it takes out a whole logistics issue - especially under the circumstances! :D

There's a red GLT saloon for sale at the moment for £2k, looks tidy enough but needs rear arches, for example.

Yeah I’m considering getting the sills done and mot’d. Had people on the Facebook group messaging me with offers over £2k but they were bragging about sticking a turbo lump in it and drifting it which I flat refuse to sell to that lot.

If I sold it as is , hopefully to an enthusiast , they’d get it back on the road and
cherish it for the time and money they put in and not slam into a wall/curbs drifting .

Who knows but it’s too decent to go cheap but also not a minter at the moment.

Would be a shame for it to get trashed, if it were blue like my old saloon I'd have been very tempted to recreate that car, even though it does look great in black!

What model is it and have you thoroughly checked it for rusted through parts everywhere? It will need a really good inspection and a prod with a screwdriver. Mine looked ok on the surface, and spent some time in a damp garage, it was scrap really but I saved it with a huge effort.

Remember its always much worse than it looks! A couple of spots on the windscreen schuttle was nothing holding the corner together inside, 2-3 layers crumbled.

There isn't easy money or a big collectors market within the community, most demand is for cheap drifters.

I do think a good Turbo sleeper would do well on the open market but noone wants to sell theirs, unless they are poorly build / unfinished projects. Aside from that it needs to be original, unmolested, low mileage and v good condition on the open market.

It's a black 360 GLT saloon, seem to recall it's a G plate which is quite rare for a 360. Sills are a lot easier to repair to a good standard than a screen surround, thankfully!

It’s a G plate 64k GLT . The only rust is on the sills, doors and surface rust in the arches . I’ve been under it with a screwdriver as I’ve had the fuel pump fail on Friday. Changing that today.

There’s no rust around the windows.

I’ve got all the original parts to return it to standard.

Yeah that sounds bad enough. So doors and sills are rusted through? Inner arches are ok?

The rust on the sills are small patches , some surface ( screwdriver didn’t get through) some with 5p size holes. It’s mainly where the moisture has got between the stone chip paint and sill rib , some had crept up.
I’ve welded this up on other cars and I’m not worried about it structure wise.
Just a job I didn’t expect.

4 spots of rust on doors. One is 50p the rest 20p size . Again shouldn’t be a problem to cut and weld.

Inner arches are good, just surface rust on the rolled section.

It’s got work to do but it’s no way a restoration job especially for its age.

I think Ride_on is particuarly pessimistic because of the time he's had to spend welding his in the past :) Realistically though, a lot of 300's are going to be like that now and some a lot worse. If you want an original GLT saloon, beggars can't be choosers :D

It certainly sounds a lot better than mine was 15 years ago! If I still had that car today I'd learn how to use the metal glue stick...!

Steve is probably right about my sharp intake of breath assessment, but most of the car doesn't rust from the outside in. In my experience the stone chip coating comes away as a result of rust, it is not the cause. The cause is water inside the sills either by splashing or capillary as the joins are not flat and sealed creating space for water to sit. The internal coatings are not perfect eventually give way and it rusts in all directions, so for sills you may need to dig in further to repair the structure to do a proper job. There are 4 pieces joining at the bottom of the sill, so potentially 4 panels need repairing, or equivalent strength.

Believe me, I have a Honda Crx vtec with some horrific rust , right through the sills to the inner sills. I’ve cut all that out and it was eye watering. And that’s not even mentioning the inner and outer arches 🤦🏻‍♂️.

I’ll be cutting out everything and inspecting the situation on the GLT From there I’ll put all right.

If you're used to repairing a CRX then the 360 probably wont be so bad :D
