I'd probably choose a B4194T (S/V40 T4 engine), but since that's not on the list...
A tweaked late B230FT

For the ultamate I go with Griz
Use a 900 IRS rear end with a bit of modification.

True.. but how mad are we going? Upto 250+bhp the stock drivetrain is fine, Kevin Strong is actually running 375bhp as Ali read (on another forum) on the standard drivetrain, although it's said that he is babying launches etc.
Plus with silly power, isn't the 900 rear end going to struggle anyway? I understand that the M90 gearbox can handle more power than the 900 diff.

the scandinavians tell me the 1041's a strong back end and that the M90 will probly snap before the diff does. The shortcomings on the 900/700 are the torque rods and the subframe...both of which i am solving with stronger items been made by a tbricker in the states.

Well here's my plan...for the 360, I'm eventually planning to end up with a 2.3 turbo lump of up to 300ftlb / 250bhp....in that kinda ball-park. I don't anticipate having to uprate anything with the possible exception of the clutch.
If Nessy ever gets as far as having a T5 lump installed...stock tune will run a stock 360 drivetrain perfectly happily...and once I start work on it...hmm...well...Porsche / Vette C5 transaxle?!
As is consistantly pointed out on TBricks (usually in relation to 9mm rods, etc), if 1/10th of the people worrying about exceeding the safe rating of their engines were actually in danger of blowing stuff up (ie: genuinely, not due to being daft with poor tuning, etc), we'd have a lot more fast bricks...
cheers

does t5 lump fit a rwd drivetrain??..also, if old 1.4/1.7 is renault/douvrin unit will renault turbo engines wi the turbo turned right up go in converted for rwd application? im thinkin old r5/new r5 gordini turbo/gt turbo, ren 11 turbo or vovlov 440/480 1.7 turbo units...sorry if these questions seem ignorant..im kinda new to this madness!!!
Did you read from here?:http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... php?t=2237biggbn wrote:does t5 lump fit a rwd drivetrain??..also, if old 1.4/1.7 is renault/douvrin unit will renault turbo engines wi the turbo turned right up go in converted for rwd application? im thinkin old r5/new r5 gordini turbo/gt turbo, ren 11 turbo or vovlov 440/480 1.7 turbo units...sorry if these questions seem ignorant..im kinda new to this madness!!!
There is adapter plate available and 360 clutch case bolt pattern is same as any transmission that fit's to redblock, so it is very much possible to make fit, lot of work however.
B23/B230 series turbo engine to 360 gives as much power as drivetrain can take and much more, some have made silly mods to drivetrain (200 or 700 serie rear axle, gearbox at front) to make it handle all that power that those engines will give.
But first you need to get answer to this question:
How much power you are aiming to?
When you have that thing cleared, then you start to look different options to archieve that number of hp you need to.
B23 with 300hp should be plenty for any use, to make 300-serie car handle all that power will require loads of time and money.
Anything over 150-170hp range will result need of reinforcing drivetrain, or we should talk more from torque, 250nm and above will most likely require some work.
And it is not about horse power, you need to get that horse power to use and that will be another challenge to face.
Anyway first thing to do is decide what amount of power you need, then planning from that point more.

Good post by Jani...I think it tells you almost everything you need to know. I'd just say beware of the 340's aluminium prop - these eat themselves all the time with just the B14. Secondly, I'd dispute the 150-170 bhp figure for the 360 drivetrain (with the exception of the clutch). I'm (eventually) planning on running up to 250bhp and 300ftlb with the turbo engine, and I don't anticipate breaking anything, with the possible exception of driveshafts.
