I saw that few members in here are driving 340 with that renault's 1.6 diesel engine. Would you recommend that engine compared to b14/17?
Main issues for me would be reliability and low maintenance costs in general(service + consumption).
I know basically nothing of that engine, so all comments and experiences are very welcome

The Volvo 340 diesel has the reputation of a slow car

but I have no experience with that model...

I think it's the only bad point... Who has a D16 here?

They were never sold here, but I think its fairly safe to say you don't want a D16. Non-turbo diesels below 3.0 litre are barely worth bothering with, especially in a reasonably heavy car like a 340. I mean a 1.4 NA diesel in a Citroen AX does 0-60 in about 20 seconds!
I'd love to take a 340 and fit a 1.9 TD engine from a 400 series - the block is more or less identical in appearance to a B172 or a D16. That would make an economical yet fairly punch performer.
A car that's too slow is a misery.
cheers

HERE are some characteristics for 300 series.
135 km/h max speed and 20 sec for accelerating to 400m for D16! No, you don't want one...

Two hours ago, I saw a wonderful 340 Diesel! The car was as new and the guy was driving slowly. In my town, if you go faster than 50 km/h, it's crazy what you have to pay... A Volvo 340 Diesel is perfect here!

After I mentioned it....I heard today of a 440 TD engine swap in progress!
I'll let you know how it turns out!

Yeah, that was from a guy near me (in derby) who sells parts....but it was a bit...er...shonky! For example, I believe the engine was an import (no parts in UK?)
This'll be a proper bo semi-stock spec installation...and it even looks like a D16 / B172! Not that he's got very far with it so far...
cheers
