Hi - Newcomer with loads of 360 parts UPDATED

Post by GLT82&88 » 08 Oct 2006 02:13 pm

Hello there - someone told me about this site - so I'd thought I'd join.

First I must use this post as an emotional outlet I'm afraid .... After more than 17 years of driving and owning 360 GLTs ... my relationship has come to an end. My wife (encouraged by my parents!) has badgered me into finally getting rid of my F-reg sitting on my front lawn (which rather than give away I quickly as possible broke for parts before it got towed away to the great GLT resting place in the sky  ).

I had a lot of fun with 1st my Y-reg GLT (which was a LOT more tunable with its seperatation of Air/Fuel metering and adjustable engine advance) and a lot of the bespoke mods got transplanted over to my power-steering equiped :P F-Reg model.

In no particular order i did: 5W/60 or 10W/60 Synthetic (never needed topping up unlike 5W/40 Mobil 1 and the like!), Koni Adjustables all round (top adjustable at front), lost viscious fan and added a Kenlowe, conical (Rover V8 type) K&N filter directly onto end of air-flow meter, camshaft change - (prob not best profile as was too "cammy" & lost too much bottom end torque for a bit more top end), ported and flowed head, various 6.5J & 7.0J x 15 alloys and both 195 and 205/50 15 mostly Yoko A510s & Bridgestone S02 PPs tyres, full hand made s/s exhaust system incl. 4-2-1 manifold, various back boxes (god the '84 onwards Volvo ones were horrible!), 240 4-pot caliper & big vented disc conversion (1st Coswoth discs ... then meatier BMW M3), various pad material from fast road to road/rally spec (great but not until hot!), Leda 170 lbs/sq" Capri front springs, blocks on rear leafs to tweak ride height at rear.....
..... loads of other stuff & also to the interior & Hella 500 spotlamps at front.

Anyway - thankyou from letting me rattle off that list of some of the things I did over the years - very theraputic !

OK NOW BRINGING THINGS UPTO DATE: Many years back (having found it hard to source bits and pieces from breakers yards) - I decided to buy salvage 360 models and strip them for parts, 1st for my use (and then stored in a rented barn for resale). Having moved from Essex to Suffolk, a lot of the bits had to go ... BUT .... I still have LOADS of bits in my garage and sheds most of remaining ext. body parts are silver met from my own F-reg car:

Hiya and welcome to the V3m madness.

First of all sorry to hear you've had to end your relationship with 360 GLTs.

We're all worried about the shortage of parts, particularly as now Volvo have started to stop making and supplying even common parts, such as heater resistor packs, rear diff gaskets and lower mounts for rear shocks.

So please don't get rid of the parts if you can. I'm fairly sure that someone will come up with some storage space cos we need to keep as many serviceable parts as possible :)

I was looking for about £25 (or near offer) due to the fact it is quite rare.

I would be open to a LOT of negotiating if their was other bits n pieces that you might be interested in.

Thanks for letting me know about this site btw - I'm a bit gutted that I didn't hold onto one of my GLTs - always wanted to keep one and see it get to some sort of "classic" status. Trouble is - mine always ended up being so far removed from standard + was always expensive to fix / replace bespoke items (unless I had skills / brave enough to DIY it).

I believe mine handled & performed in quite a different league altogether form your standard spec GLT - they were great (controlled throttle steerable) rear-drive fun!! But when you got use to how modern front drive & 4-wheel drive (like my Subauru) drove .... and how quickly you could drive around bends / roundabouts etc in all conditions WITHOUT EVEN CONCENTRATING .... you saw how dated the 340 and 360 Volvos had become. For me that was (and is) their charm. Involving at low speeds too (especially in the wet!). Plus they were the last of a kind of Escort sized car that you could have a fairly big shunt in, without it being a no-hoper repair job - VERY STRONG front corners!

BTW - There are loads of other 340 & 360 bits that I will no doubt list in full when I go though phase 2 or 3 of my garage re-organisation !!

Hi and welcome!

Nice collection of parts. :P How much would you like for the ambient temp gauge kit and would you ship to Finland? I understand if you don't want to sell outside the country, but just thought to ask. :) Those temp gauges are kinda rare in here as all the 300-series are pretty much low-spec models what comes to accessories, because of the taxing we had in the 80's.. :P

Big Brake Conversion

Post by GLT82&88 » 08 Oct 2006 02:56 pm

BTW - I cannot stress enough how awesome and what a complete and utter transformation my 4-pot caliper and big disc conversion made. It was done by a specialist just south of the QE2 Bridge in Kent - he is well known for his expertise in machining the correct fitments for unusual requirements.

Also from someone who has personally sold (and owned) Impreza Turbos & the like - the front end braking is at least in this league. Just a shame that so much braking (pre or post conversion) went to the front. 2.0 litre 360s definately should have had rear discs as standard (like 240s etc).

The calipers and discs JUST ABOUT clear within 15" wheels (indeed even the profile of the inside of the alloys is a factor to how much clearance you get).

Adam on this forum (340 GLT) has done a rear disk brake conversion himself, and I think he used Impreza bits :)

Hi and welcome, I spotted some of your auctions on EBay a while ago and saw the interesting rims, (yes even from that tiny section of the photo at a funny angle to the wheel!) They look like a nice match for a 300, someone should get them to be unique!

Sounds like you really liked your 360's and did a lot to them, and great fore thought to stock pile bits too, as we are discovering, Volvo are slowly not catering for 300's anymore.

Might be interested in a couple of bits, email sent!

Welcome! We should talk about the brakes, assuming the price is sane...

I totally know what you mean about concentrating on driving a 300 fast. In good conditions I can keep up with an average driver in the twisties in most semi-sports cars....but good grief is it hard work / on the limit.

cheers

Brakes & Alloys/Tyres etc

Post by GLT82&88 » 09 Oct 2006 01:59 am

Hi everyone - not suprisingly it is the big disc & 4-pot caliper kit that is getting a lot of the attention - I will endeavour to make time to photograph them ASAP for those interested (although bear in mind they have been on an undriven car for around 2 years). **SOLD**

* Have several K&N conical filters that have been cleaned and (too heavily) reoiled for storage. I would personally suggest quickly de-oiling them, rinsing and letting them dry, and CAREFULLY AND MINIMALLY re-oiling them before use .... they should be only very slightly pink in appearance - not soaked. They go straight onto airflow meter box (can then get rid of all black plastic trunking) and make a significant difference to performance and throttle response (great with a straight through exhaust / different backbox and running on Shell Optimax).

** SOLD ** The K&N Dyna 6.5 x 15" wheels that I have relisted on Ebay (this time with NO RESERVE) were professionally resprayed in the 130? Silver Metallic Volvo colour to match the car exactly - they look awesome and clean beautifully. NB- There are 5 of them (all with tyes), as I wanted one always as on board spare. They were mainly worn on my GLT without metal centre caps (I had substantial, see thru end design wheel nuts on - which torqued up better for peace of mind) Ebay Ref: 200034981061

.... boo hoo  .... I'm getting a lot of remorse here guys for having let my GLT go ! It is also really great to know that there are still some fellow wierdos out there who get an unhealthy buzz out of subtly modifiying their 360s and amusing the hell out of modern hotish hatch drivers out there!

REAR WHEEL DRIVE  = tail-out respect (a bit easier too with lighter & slightly quicker lock power-steering models!) .... huh ... another item I should have removed !

I am also gutted I didn't know of this site before decision to (or in last stages of breaking my GLT). In the end - to keep wife etc sweet - she went with beautifully sweet engine and ancilleries fully in tact including good cond. plastic undertray, front doors, Koni Adjustable shocks all round, nearly new std exhaust system (with that awful back box that transformed a screaming fast top end response back to rubbish btw - and no "pop" from unburnt Superplus Unleaded Optimax in high rev gear changes  ).
Exhaust much quieter for my younger, more impressionable and street cred brother to be "seen" in ... he was the final user of my baby before she rested up on corner of my front drive. He never really did "get it" why I loved the 360 GLT so much - just a slightly faster granny car to him ! (oh the disrespect  !)

As I always said to my mates with XR2s, XR3s, VW GTis and Mantas, Capris etc ........ "RESPECT THE GiLT" !!! :)

Unfortunately spending £hundreds each time on special bits (often hand crafted) and indeed £thousands over the years in total - was not going to wash now (with a big mortgage, family & 2 kids) .... but it was fun while it lasted! Trouble is - I knew I would have to take things to the next (much more expensive) stage. The next stage would have been 740 GLT 2.0 16V lump (or LPT 2.0 if braver) along with somehow changing the front strut legs to items with fully adjustable spring / ride height settings and much more appropraite stubb axles .... now that would have been sweet !! ( dreams)

Well, yep there are certainly a few of us about. It's one of those things that you think you are alone in your odd liking of the 300, then you discover it is a know condition and can be treated on V3M!

Yeah, it's a shame you didn't find V3M first before the car had to be broken. But at least you're here now with a lot of parts to pass on!

You can pick up a GLT for £200, keep it round a mates house and the wife will never know ;)

Definate shame you didnt know about this place before you scrapped the car (how long ago did it go BTW?). A lot of people would have bitten your hand off for the parts you had on that!! In fact the spec of your car sounds like exactly where I want mine to be, but that'll be many years away I'm sure!

I'd be interested in one of your K&N filters. I want to get rid of the nasty backbox soon, with the intention of having a full exhaust made up at some point in the future, so it'd be rude not to let the induction side of things breathe better!

The brake setup sounds awesome. If you fancy throwing that in too for a couple of extra quid to get it out of your way I wouldn't complain ;)

I fully agree with everything you have said mate and understand where you are coming from brakes and suspension wise!! My car now handles like a dream and stops on a sixpence!!!!
300's are addictive for what they are and its a shame your leaving it behind you but you can always visit this forum to see what others are doing to their 300's out there!!!!

I'll continue to live a 360 GLT virtual reality here !!

Post by GLT82&88 » 12 Oct 2006 07:57 pm

Thanks for all the friendly replies & interest in the numerous parts I have. I'll at least make time over next copuple of days to photograph the 4pot calipers & big discs. PLEASE DO KEEP THE ENQUIRIES COMING - I have a garage & shed full of various bits (although a lot more stuff from the barn I rented went when I moved from Essex to Suffolk around 3 1/2 years ago) :(

I'll repeat .... I AM GUTTED that I didn't know of this site in last couple of years - but, current 300 series owner or not, now I'm here - I'm not going anywhere !! ...

... in fact it would be good to help out others where I can with parts, advice, technical help etc etc (especially more on the 360 models)

Maybe in Spring 2007 onwards, I'd be interested in meeting up with anyone that is interested in doing something in East Anglia region ??

Again, re: the parts (from my F-reg 360 GLT and from numerous 360 models that I bought salvage and stripped) .... Although I had my arm bent and was "forced" to get rid of a lot of doors, tailgates, engines etc etc .... I have kept everything from the very teeniset small bulbs to complete wiring looms, carpets, electrical bits, interior trim bits, etc etc etc

Bye for now :)

Well, I'm gonna be down in Kent picking up a fiat X1/9 next weekend, so it's no real problem for me to come over to ipswich. What's another few miles when you've already travelled 300 or so? :D
