Child Lock Stuck On?? - help please!

Post by Figgy » 17 Jul 2008 01:42 pm

Ok guys, I know someone here will know how to fix this. The rear left side door will only open from the outside. I've got the door card off and had a bit of a look. The inside door handle moves, but the little "rod" seems to have come off at the lock end. I can't actually see/feel where it's supposed to fit back on. :? How do I fix it?

if it is indeed the child lock there is a lever on the inside back edge of the door that engages and disengages the child lock. at least on my old 5 door this is what happened.

We bought our GLT with a broken rear door handle AND the child lock on, so we couldn't open the door from either outside or inside. Door card off and a lot of poking around with a long screwdriver finally got the child lock off and the door unlatched.

Our problem was different to yours, but the rods from the interior door handle go straight to the lock/latch thingy IIRC ...

Thanks for your replies, hubby sorted the problem out today. The rod for the door handle had indeed come adrift at the lock end....so after "modifying" the inside of the door, with the angle grinder - said lever is now back in it's little round nylon home. :D

That's probably the best way. I grazed my knuckles something awful trying to get the rear door handle off - ended up getting a local mechanic to do it instead ...

I actually suggested the angle grinder, just because it's a very awkward spot to reach, the door card covers it up, so all's good. lol

Have to look at the drivers door handle next, it works fine, but the silver handle on the outside lifts higher on one end. I have a whole complete 2nd hand door handle, but now have to work out how to change the lock barrels from one to the other. <----THIS will be a challenge! lol

Changing the barrel is quite easy. Changing the door handle is a real hassle though. The old one comes out easyish, but the new one will only go in one way, and that one way is very difficult to find! Expect lots of fiddling around, be patient and you'll get there in the end.

It is a fiddle, and hooking up all the bits of coathanger again is a pain.

To change the lock barrel, you need to knock out the rolled split pin (I've always used an unused pop rivet as a drift) then the outer plate, and barrel can be swapped over :D
