Post by Stefan » 18 Aug 2008 08:22 pm

I am new to this forum but met Foggyjames at the daf week, I was there in my daf 55, I saw his 343 and thought I have not seen one of those for years its very cool 8) maybe i sould get one as a winter car daily smoker. Then I looked on here and had to find one.
Well i went to my local scrap yard looms in derby to get some belts of a 340 Auto and this is what i found and came home with  , still not got the belts :? .

No tax or MOT body very solid but off side rear quarter has tacken a bash from scrap yard fork truck and both front and rear screens smashed.
Engine has no carb but other than that looks complete. Other than that just recomisioning.
Got to finish conservatory and kitchen then i can start work on it.

OMG  wow! You found that at a scrap yard? "Black Beauty"'s are seriously sought after in the dutch V3C scene, that's a pretty amazing find!

Yes it was mint on saturday when it came in so the woman who runs the yard says but in to days it got bashed and the screen smashed :x . They cut all cables and pipes to the carb instead of disconecting them which is pants and makes life harder :x .
I am only the second owner of the car and it has 64000 on the clock been laid up for some time by last owner (think he has passed away and family scraped the car  .
The car has always been local to me but i never had any idea.

I find it impossible to understand minds which see car only as transportation device and when it does not shine like new or is not in latest fashion they scrap it, maybe my brain has malfunction, but I just can't understand it.

Wonderful news it is that you managed to save car from worse, windows should be fairly simple job but perhaps does cost quite some money if buying new ones, connections of carb are not that bad either, it has only 3 wires at most if that is cisac, but I guess it might be weber in car of such age and engine? I believe those had less wires then.

Vacuum hoses and such should also be rather simple job and not pricey.

But carb itself, specially one in good nick, can be bit difficult to source, maybe different over there?

That is utterly amazing! You and Paul deserve a medal for being in the right place at the right time and spotting this car! I hate to think of how many times wonderful cars like this have been lost, but this is one of the lucky times in which it has been saved. It does annoy me when someone has cherished it and looked after it, only for someone to come along once they've passed away and dispose of things in an uncaring and disrespectful manner. Surely they thought someone would be interested in it, despite it being an old car.

I forgot to ask about a car I saw in my local scrapyard the other day, a Jag XJS in green TWR racing stickers. It had been damaged and pretty well stripped, sure it's cubed by now.

Well done once again, it'll be fantastic to see such a rare model back on the road and cared for!

They must have had money to burn too. TBH, if you inherited a good condition 30-year old car, would you scrap it, even if you had no interest in it whatsoever? Ebay or an ad in a classic car mag would produce several times the scrap value of the car.

Does anyone know if that special edition was really called "Black Beauty" in the UK? In Belgium it was the "Black Diamond" apparently, and in Austria they didn't give it any name at all, see this post:

I've never seen a UK registered Black Beauty style, I didn't think we got them!

Stefan, awesome find, not that you will, but if you ever want to sell her ;) Until that time though, any parts any of us can help with let us know, we have random stuff on shelves here. I've been given a bag of points recently for early 1.4's to give out to the needy for example ;)

You mention enough about not having the pennies to sort the two you have out fully, let alone another car! :P

Jeeeeesus! How early a car is that???? Nice find young man.

I've seen your Marathon out and about before if it's the one I'm thinking of. There's green 55 estate near me that's always parked up on the grass verge. It looks tidy, but never seems to go anywhere so I hope it's being looked after
