Hmm, sudden low idling and missing power.
Cam belt jumped off by one-two tooth?
Seizing bearing causes more resistance to turn the engine, if you turn engine manually (ie. by hand) is it normal or heavy? Anyway might be possible to tell if starter turns motor slower than usual.
Sure some gasket of carb can be a problem or clogged jet etc. however it often has some other symptoms as well, so I would like to keep mind open for other possibilities as well.

Hi Steve.
I was told to put some injection cleaner in mine even though it is non injection.
Apparently it cleans out the whole system.I did this and the car is now working fine.
Cheers Mark.

Have you checked the diaphragm for splits? A torn, worn or non sealing/stretched diaphragm would cause the piston to stick.

I forgot to mention that the potential diagnosis given the symptoms was a torn diaphragm.... having spoken to Rupert on the phone a new one is on order... may as well since they're £3!

Last conversation we had you said don't bother with a carb rebuild, captain rust
Oh and definitely not a slipped cambelt... car runs and revs fine if you move the piston manually via the carb inlet (where the air filter housing is attached)

Sounds like Brummie misunderstanding

Rupert rang me last night to chat it over and I agree with him to, it'd cause the symptoms wouldn't it.
I still reckon your throttle spindle bushes will be knackered, I put the SU's I rebuild for my mates MGB V8 on last night and it runs hugely better for those, there was feelable play there before.

Yep, does indeed seem like it will be the diaphragm having discussed it last night... Ahh... knackered based on what fact?

I'll take it one step at a time to be honest - I imagine it will run nicely again after this

No, he'd only be an ITG if he finished it with "like I humoured your Mrs last night. And your Mum".
Just something I mentioned on the phone earlier, but the thread might benefit from too...the PO of my (ex) 240 with that carb used to get the diaphragm changed every year at the service, as they tore for a living.
cheers
