Better turn collector at those insurance prices, with 3000 a year you can get nice garage and every now and then new ebay gem to store into safety until car is so forgotten nobody even remembers it anymore, then insurance might be bit more sensible.
Totally ridiculous to ask 10 times car's value per year as insurance payments.

Not really when you consider the amount of liability you might have to cough-up for. The insurer has to be ready to settle a claim for a considerable sum. I think it has to be at least £1m.jtbo wrote:Totally ridiculous to ask 10 times car's value per year as insurance payments.
Anyway, here is a list of excuses provided by the Association of British Insurers PDF
Re: Need desperate help with insurance
AFAIK on most if not all classic policies you don't get NCB?
Can't advise you on which company etc. sorry.
I would say that doing the following could save you some money:
-limited milage
-Not driving in rush hour times
-there's a company called 'marmalade' or something that means you can only drive for 6am till 11pm quite a bit cheaper i've heard
-When you pass do pass plus - dunno how much it is now but IIRC it saves 40% for first 2 years on your first policy
-After that there are safe driving oganisations such as the 'institute of advanced motorists' that teach you some great stuff and make you a better driver, aswell as having their own insurance scheme for IAM members. I've done it and it was the best use of £80 i could imagine when it comes to driving. (but they won't insure me due to being 19 and wanting to insure a 2L) But other companies recognise it and give discounts. RoSPA is another organisation i think.
-Locked garage if you have one
-no mods (declare them if you have them tho!)
-I did think about getting a tracker, few hundred quid but the online quotes showed i would make my money back in 1 year
Hope that helps!
edit: apparently you COULD set up your own insurance company if you had £1M
lol

True, but any NCD is hee-haw use if after discount, the price is still a telephone number. The youngest V300 is going to be knocking on 20 years, and quite a number of standard motor policy insurers won't entertain cars over a certain age. I had this trouble with Direct Line donkey years ago (max age of vehicle 25 years-old for new business), Norwich Union (now Aviva) (30 years old). This may be as low as 15 years in some cases.Nimminz wrote:AFAIK on most if not all classic policies you don't get NCB?
So it's a double-edged problem - Young Driver + old car - makes it a specialist sort of product.
