Well, there is one 1.4 340DL 1989 model for 1390 euros, maybe that gives you idea about price level?

For 3000 euros can't get much anything else than french cars at somewhat usable state, diesel seem to up the price to near to double.

Small family cars are mostly possible, pre 2000 mostly, I have bit of hatred towards, japanese cars, Toyota being already expensive and Subaru being totally too expensive, while other japanese being too crap/stupid, then Opel, Ford, VW are too rough/harsh/spartan, some unreliable or generally poor name, BMW is out of the question as all in my price level are beaten to death, bring back and beated to death again, mercs are just end of their life, skoda, audi vw being also expensive, there is not too much to choose from then.

Also need to get one from dealer, not on private market which of course limits my options.

http://www.nettiauto.com/ pick cars from right and you can get shocked from prices, "Polttoaine" put there diesel and prices are quite incredible by your standards, I'm sure.

Petrol Pug 306 would be easy to find in low mileage and around a 1000 euros, but that would cost easily 2000 more in a year to run than my current one.

I did notice that Megane I with 1.6litre petrol unit is consuming only 5 litres per 100km, there would be difference of 0.2 euros per litre in fuel, which would make 640 euros in a year and I would save on taxes and MOT some 300-400 euros each year, so with that model it would not be incredible more expensive and if car is costing only bit over 1000 then it might be an option too, but that might be not the best option.

My current ZX is 306 in disquise really, same motor, only interior + sheetmetal is different.

Current best tank is 65.9mpg, but this is Break/Wagon and I have 200-300kg of extra load with me because of work, Pug might be bit more streamlined and if can find cheap HDi version fuel economy will be great, but same goes for Citroen too, Renault having greater fuel economy version with earlier year model and thus being at lower price and there is also more to choose from, also ncap 4 stars is better than 3 or less of others, you don't never know if lunatic crashes on you out there.

hey jtbo!, is an elcat cityvan out of your price range?
no petrol / diesel cost, just electric!.
interesting that a finnish company make them in rhd!. (RHD Subaru sambar)
is an ex - posti van reasonable price?, i would have the full vw hippy wagon thing going on if i had one with an insane external large sun visor at the front, could be useful in -15 degrees centigrade finland lol
you could always sell it in london when you're finished with it, as it would avoid all congestion and emission tax in UK!.
and if you had solar panels motoring would cost almost nothing!

if my advice is completely useless please disregard this comment.

I doubt that any electric car will carry 300-400kg payload over 500 miles @ 50mph non stop, probably not in my lifetime.

El-Car did bought them from japan, removed motors and put electrics in, then sold motors if my memory is not having a error.

Good cars for city and suburb use, but not much of use for long trips which I mostly drive, from home to shop it is 60-70km roundtrip.

Pug 306, ZX/Xsara or Megane I, there seems to be list that I really can afford with even a little reasonable mileage and condition, rest seem to be bit expensive for what they are when compared to these.

Must try to make some savings still, hoping to get enough savings to get car changed without any loan, 4000-5000 would buy very modern and decent ride, 1500 vs 3000 seem not to have huge difference.

In case you haven't noticed, rest of europe drives on wrong side of road

Our tax system with cars is 2nd only to Denmark, that means prices here are very very high and if one imports car from other EU country, he must pay quite bit of additional taxes, which together with import costs is putting price level nearly to same + additional time needed.

That also keeps car prices high, but at least there is now bit more options, before the court case where EU did order our country to obey rules, we had lot less cars to choose from and prices were bit higher, just took several years this to change. Before that we did not really have many top spec models, our tax system did put hefty price for any extras, so everyone bought base trim level, Saab actually did made model for finnish market, it had less options than lowest spec models during that time

Cars are expensive and modding them is highly restricted, so putting more modern motor and box to older car is difficult, if car is enough old then it is easier, but anything after late 80's and there are too many rules to deal with for my liking.

Pug 307 diesel starts from ~4500, that is first models made and some have silly high mileage, but some ask such money from 940 diesel if it has low mileage, meaning bit under 300 000km

Guys, how much is this kind of car at your place ?

http://www.nettiauto.com/subaru/impreza/3873266

That is 2.0 manual 4wd wagon, 1996 and 250 000km, non turbo, 2 490 euros, I think that Subaru name costs here ton of extra compared to other places, it would be very nice car for my usage just if it would drink bit less, can't really afford petrol for one.

subadobaroo's can be quite cheap here, probably half the cost here,

306 turbo diesel 250euros if you look hard enough with tax and test.(converted price)

1000 pounds could buy a real nice motor in England

ive seen volvo 440 diesels for under £400 t&t too

i saw a 940 diesel on eBay go for £120 a while ago. had 6months tax and test.

there was a time when a 300 wouldn't go over 100 on eBay but this has changed a fair bit.

£1000 could just buy a 1.5 clio diesel it would be a bit of a dog, but cars here rarely have as much mileage as the ones in Finland!

on an mpg note we got 78mpg from a pug 106 1.5 diesel! that same engine broke 100mpg in special trials on mpg

Diesels without a turbo seem to be quite bit cheaper here, but then again they are missing vital component, diesel does need a turbo to function properly :D

Here 106 diesels seem to cost around 3000, there is one costing 650, but it is broken and has no MOT.

306 turbo diesel with blown headgasket is here 800 euros, 250 in there from working one is causing certain emotions in me

Our cars are getting high mileage because here distances are quite big, 100km is rather common commute distance, nation's average is around 40-50km from my memory, also owning a car is taxed quite high, so people have often only one car and our cities are really small, to get shopping one have to travel usually quite long distance, relatives are spread all over the country because of jobs and this country is 1200km long and some 350-400km wide.

Public transport works only at bigger cities, train routes have practically not improved, most small stations are actually closed so you have to travel that 40km or more to get into station.

Average mileage of license holders is around 20 000 - 25 000km, can't remember more precise, but that means that those who actually drive drive more and usually one car sees driving from two license holder.
