Pops 'n' bangs are the future. We drove into sheffield on saturday alongside a karmann ghia coupe thing and it was deafening, with awesome sputtering noises any time the revs dropped. Think WRC but louder

I have an S70 2.5 20v, and Ryan now has an 850 T5...they're really great cars for just bumming around in...and the sound is glorious. The NA is slightly louder than the stock T5, if anything.
As for strength...it depends on what you want. An 8v redblock will get you to about 400bhp on the stock internals (but with a ballache worth of work either 'building' the 8v cylinder head, or swapping a 16v), and I suspect with the right combination of parts, the same is true of a whiteblock. I'm quite sure 350 is do-able, and I suspect you could get to 400 if you're careful, and use a later engine.
Beyond 400bhp, you need to 'build' either of them. It's kinda swings and roundabouts. A T5 motor has broken the 1000bhp barrier now, so they're not exactly lagging behind redblocks.
As for T5 swapping a 300...I have a spare T5 engine, and it's on the cards...once everything else is out of the way
cheers
James

the sound of the 5 cylinder is glorious! On the way to Dai's house there is a series of tunnels. they are perfectly shaped so as to echo the sound of the engine and exhuast more than the roar of the tyres. most tunnels just give you tyre roar
open all windows and put your foot door.... surround sound 5 cylinder volvo soundtrack!!! Top gear style as richard hammond did in the tunnel between switzerland and germany in a Zonda.
AWESOME
worth going to anglesey just for that!!

Enjoy your 300s
Well we made it back. ECU fault turned out to be nothing - gave me an o2 sensor error and ECU memory loss. Reset it all and 500+miles later it hasn't come back on.
Overall I'm impressed with the car. Love the noise, the engine, the comfyness, the creature comforts (albeit quite limited on my car compared to others), the handling in the dry and the interior space. Don't like the 26.4mpg I've averaged andthe handling in the wet - 1st, 2nd and even 3rd to some extent is useless at full throttle, but I did expect that. But I'm glad I bought it - as James says it's perfect for bumming around in!!
Cheeky shot of the 850 on tour (Nat thought I was very sad for taking this!):

That's not taken in Kingswear, is it? I might be miles off, but there are a number of distinctive things in that shot....

Crikey...I've almost shocked myself there! It certainly is a nice road. There are some really lovely spots in that part of the world. I do miss Torbay, but it's very cut off in certain ways.
You'd have been very near my folks' place when you were heading between Brixham and Paignton.
cheers

Welcome the T5 Daily Driver club! lol
Have to say - I am very impressed with mine. I managed to snag a Cd spec one so I'm enjoying all of the creature comforts (although who designed the window switch placement needs shooting).
The auto box in mind kills the mpg around town but I am getting about 17-18 mpg (better than the 700 anyway)
May I ask how much?

I'd struggle to justify one as a DD though I think.... under 20mpg = bad daily driver

Yeah we found a few cracking roads there, and mostly that was only taking shortcuts when the A roads were busy. I really do like Devon and Cornwall!
AFAIK mine is just an 850 Turbo T5 - no other spec. Maybe it's because it's an early one? I'd have liked air con, but I guess that's not such a huge issue this time of the year - it's got a good heater and heated seats, so should be OK!! The one thing I'd like to try and fit is remote c/l, and I'm working on that at the mo.
It cost me £400 with MoT till June or July next year. Plus I got a new front tyre put on, oil/filter change and new handbrake shoes. It's also recently had a cambelt and a new fuel pump. The sale of my Citroen BX (no tax or MoT and needed work to pass) near enough paid for it which was nice.
