there is a fixing screw that holds the points to the dizzy plate
and another screw that you tighten once the points are gapped (i.e. with the feeler gauge in between the two contact heads )

I think you also have to set the engine at a certain amount of degrees before or after tdc so that the offset cam in the dizzy opens and shuts the points at the right time and place

I hope that makes some sense its been many a year since I have done points ( probably on a mini or cortina mk 2 )
EH. i know points as spark plugs.

fixing screw dizzy plate have lost me an i spent 3 years of college doing mehcanics. got a picture and i might know what your on abotu via a different name lol

Points are on a *proper* dizzy, i.e. one you can change timing on. If you havn't looked at a car pre 85 then you prolly won't have seen one!

Local motor factors will do you them for about £12 I seem to remember it was when me and Aleks went to the local one. Proper type like Midnight Motors, not A1 Barry Stereos Ltd though ;)

well i got the dizzy cap and arm fitted them.
changed the plugs too.

but i could not see any points that would need replacing under the dizzy cap? haynes manual has nothing on it either? :? i can put a picture up later.

i may take another look tonight when i do the oil change. so much fun doing it onth road side in the dark - shall we place bets on how much oil actually goes in the bucket :(

does anyone else have break down problems with these motors? i could understand with the 343 since in has a renault engine sm66

well this is the 1st stuff i have done and since i have done 2000miles in 5 weeks-ish i thought i best.

thing is all the stuff i am changing look new. slight wear on one of the terminals on the dizzy cap and one of the spark plugs looked a bit dirty. so i guess the lady i bought it off did keep it serviced well!

the engine stutters slightly when i ask too much of her when cold so i was hoping to cure it, still has it, but the engine is smooth aside from that.

oil change tonight if the weather holds out then dif ad gear box oil after my trip to newcastle and back. more miles on the clock :( but whats a car for :D i get sooooooooo many people look at the yellow beast and smile its great! esspecially now i have T-cut the paint back to a brighter yellow 8)
