I *think* it is early injection 1.8's, B18EP/FP's. Certainly I've only seen them on earlier 400's pre facelift but that doesn't mean much! I am intrigued to see if the decreased plenum size is going to affect me, but I've kept the turbo one too incase it does!

This is still going to be my daily 300 though so I want to keep the heater, especially as it should be getting AC after it's running.

Nice work Chris. Just one thought, do mk2 heater boxes fit mk3s? Looking at one the other day, it looked like it'd clear an F7P throttle body, but I didn't measure it or anything. Might be one to try, though it'd entail getting creative with screenwash routing.

I took a mk2 one out the other day, so should remember this... but can't! I think the top 2 screws are the same, but the bottom mounts are different. Doesn't matter too much, I'm in creative heater mode for my other project anyway!

If I can keep Kar with a mk3 box, it'll make dropping AC in a bit easier anyway.

Right, rust chasing today. The inner wings are a bit worse than I thought, but not as bad as I've seen before. The structural screwdriver took a couple of tiny holes and made them mansized...

And with the wing off, from the inside of the wing itself

And the drivers side inner wing which is starting to bubble a bit as can be seen

And with the wing off again (after the structural screwdriver has been applied)

Oh dear, lets have a closer look at that, yup it is a hole...

Tis a sad state :( Tomorrow is angle grinding and patch making!

Close of play today

It seems the pictures have scared the bloke I was going to get to weld it up! On the plus side, it's all good, and I've been meaning to learn how to do bodywork.

Soooo, the plan. I am going to prep everything and he's coming to actually glue the new bits in (I do want to weld them, but I don't want the first thing I do to be my car. I need to do some off the car first to practise, and don't have time before I go back to Soton)

Dont spose anyone still makes inner wings do they? Else I'm going to take a big hammer to a lump of sheet steel tomorrow.

What I find surprising is that the edge of the wheelbase, the arch, seems to be quite solid but there's rust above that in the almost flat surfaces. :-P Usually the rusting begins at the arch and around the bolts the metal is almost always gone.

I'd be also interested if anyone makes inner wings anymore. Those are not available from Volvo anymore I checked. I'm going to replace both outer wings with brand new Volvo ones and it would be a lot easier (and cheaper :D) to use ready repair pieces for inner wings than have the welder to fabricate them out of sheet metal.

It's most noticeable on the drivers side, but those bits where paint still exists the paint isn't flaky. The shop sprayed waxoil can be seen over it too, but not where the rust is I'm guessing.

I'm gonna take Fakes wings off soon to check, but the A pillar drain holes in the wings were full with compressed mud about 8" up the wing, between inner and outer. I still reckon the later shells where just chucked through with less care to rust proofing.

EDIT: Fuse, I know what you mean... it's in the flat metal, but seems to be around the seam sealer where the box section of the inner wing meets the flat main upright. Strange...

Right, being on the island has advantages... I need a blacksmith to buy metal and they have several on the island (inc a steam boiler maker :D awesomes)

However, being on the island also means they arn't open. I'll head to the pub.. someone there will know someone who owns a blacksmiths and I'll prolly be able to barter some metal for a chicken or two.
