No problem running a 300 as a daily, I do approx 12-15k per year in mine and it's still solid after 8k :D

How long was your car off the road when you did your jacking point ;)
I agree, I'm not convinced it's the cleverest thing ever anymore, not like back in the day...

However, comparing Fake to anything else is unfair, she's done 211k, she still does 15k a year, and should have been put down a long time ago! Poor GLS, sounds like she needs a home.

.......................................... Im just gonna say it.

When did 300 ownership become about practicality and sensibility, and other mords that ind in -ility or -ible.
Drive em coz you love em.

If you want something a bit more (insert '-ible' word here) then go for it man.

I know a lot of folk run a 300 as a fun 2nd car, and if i was in a position to run TWO cars, id have 2 300s.
But im somewheat of a masochist.
Sure chris fits in that uncomfortable pidgeon hole too.

Go for what you feel Steve.

It's a pity the signs of rust to come were too bad on a car with low mileage, must have been stored outside for quite a while? Once they start going, it really is an uphill struggle in daily and winter use. I drove around to 8 to 10,000 miles a year in my 343 for 10 years (the car was already 14 years old when I got it) I reckon once you get to 18+ years of normal un-garaged daily & winter driving, welding, filler and spray cans become part of your life!

When Vicky was using the 340 as her only car covering over 25,000 miles a year it did quite well. Admitedly there were odd nights when I had to stay up working on the car untill 1 in the morning that was normaly due to an upgrade needing more work than first thought.
In all fairness to the car (got the car at 86,000 and took it off the road at 220,000) for the miles it was doing it coped very well with the only big let down being when the engine buggered up after sucking in water.
With all the niggles sorted out she will be going back to using the car as a daily with the aim of making it one of the highest milage 300's in the world. She loves the car even after being spoilt with the 240

Does the 300 tick your boxes?

Thats what pains me most about running a 300 daily.
Not having a garage. :(
Run it everyday, watch it sit outside in the snow and rain, and watch it slowly rot. :x
Got to get some under cover storage/workspace sorted. :?

Yup, spot on mate. Thing is, if you get involved, and go through changing *everything* that needs it when you get a new one (not just saying, hmmm, it's not broken, I'll leave it) you'll have a hugely reliable car. One day, I'm going to actually do that!

Yeah, possibly tbh. I've *really* tried to find a newer car. I just can't. I've had this conversation with Steve a lot, my requirements for a car are how much I enjoy driving it, practicality, cost, then other things. If I could find a newer car that I find as much fun, I would have sold up by now (ok, I probably wouldn't have, but still). Theres still a scary amount being dailied, off the top of my head:

Me, Andy, Adam, VND, Speedy from here, plus I can think of another 10 or so not on these forums.

Yup, thats when it gets annoying, knowing you need to get 60miles to work the next day...

It's the range of driving that I can do in this thing that gets me. I do normal daily of course, to and from uni but it also takes the punishment of using it for pizza delivering twice a week. That's lots of start stops. Then also I travel long distances to all over the country sometimes 20 or 30 times a year. It does everything with no complaints. I mean sure I've had the typical things replaced but I've had to put a new battery in recently (old one was a hella one with liquid acid worryingly. Started to wounder if it was an original  ) but everything has just been age rather than serious wear. Only welding done was 2 sill holes about an inch accross.

I've done 8k on a nackered clutch bearing ffs! (can't be arsed to change it yet) Other than a 240, I can't think of a better car for daily driving except maybe a 360 with PAS

Oh and of course I do put my foot down and it does what I want. Had another brown trouser moment last night in the rain

Funnily enough the car had been kept garaged all of it's life, til about 3 weeks ago! By no stretch of the imagination it wasn't bad for rust, and VERY original, no previous welding - but I'm being particularly hard as I simply don't want to go down that route again.

I can see what you're all saying but although they will be fine as a daily driver, it's not like they don't require fairly regular attention and tlc (other than simple servicing). Doesn't help when you can't just pop down to Volvo and get parts as well :( Looks like it will be some fwd toss Volvo instead and dream of the day when I have a garage (by which time 300's will be too expensive to buy :P)

I miss it but now I think I've developed special volvo muscles in my arms. Also I've learned to lean round corners

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING can be worse than that old fiesta I had. The driving position made me feel like a midget. It was like trying to operate a steam train whilst sitting in a child's chair.

Pansies... I'm daily driving a 360 turbo through the Finnish winter every year without having my own garage space... :D AND installing megasquirt to it soon.. Well I don't do so many miles in a year though.. Rust could be an issue though if you don't attack it as soon as it starts to show some signs. But then again I've had both inner and outer sills replaced, both front fenderes and some sections of the floor... :D We're not too affraid of a bit of rust here because it's almost impossible to find a 300-series which would be rust free.. Luckily sheet and plate metal is cheap. 8)
