Phoning(is this a word, calling with phone?) to family asking them to bring hot water, when your little fella is frozen to door lock, well that must be quite priceless

You can add me to the 'frozen out of the car' gang.
Couldnt even get into the boot.

48 seconds with the key dipped in a cup of boiled water did the trick though.
Cheers for the tip V3M.

Re: jack frost locked me out
Chris, you got there more snow than we have, here it is mostly about an inch
This baker is talking about your weather, might be some interest to see how accurate his forecast is.
http://markvoganweather.blogspot.com/20 ... urope.html
All of you, get gun oil and use that to your locks and latches or whatever those bits were called, it is usually done here at autumn before cold weathers start. Gunoil stays liquid in very cold temperatures and keeps moisture off from lock so there is nothing to freeze, but as your locks are already frozen, you need some lock defrost to blow that moisture out from lock. If not done properly lock will just freeze again.
I hope everyone did dry their keys before inserting them to lock? If not, just wait till next morning, there can be really fun half day work with locks, that is if you get weather below zero tomorrow too.

Thanks for the tips Jani, I'll get onto that. It's starting to loose the amusement factor

Re: jack frost locked me out
It seems that the grease or something absorbs the water. I used to get this 20 years ago on my 345, sometimes the passenger door wouldn't even close.
Eventually I took the lock completely out and removed the barrel, cleaned through with white spirit and WD40 and regreased with copper grease. Was fine after that. I really don't recommend water, it will just get worse next time, I just used hand heat first then blew hot air from lungs into it.

Re: jack frost locked me out
From your lungs there comes quite lot of water out too, but that does not get into lock very easily.
This is good lock defrost, it blows water and goo out from lock with some excessive usage, however when using, it tends not to lubricate lock so right after using that and getting lock to work gun oil is needed as otherwise lock will wear out really quick.

I guess you will find some similar stuff from UK.
These bottle types I have found all to be useless.

Of course you can inject Koskenkorva into lock and it does pretty much same job, that is nice excuse to buy a bottle of Koskenkorva isn't it? Any stuff with high percent of alcohol will do the trick too.
Koskenkorva tends to freeze somewhere near -20C but for example nail color remover works well in cold (cold is when Koskenkorva freezes
), you can use also some wound cleaning liquids as some of those are alcohol based.
This should tell what that odd word Koskenkorva is if there is someone never heard from it before http://www.dlc.fi/~marianna/gourmet/kosknkrv.htm
Problem with drinkable alcohol (if Koskenkorva is drinkable?) is that it is not enough pure alcohol, so when alcohol disappears it leaves some stuff behind.

Re: jack frost locked me out
I sprayed mine this morning with WD40, then 30 mins later poured a load of 3 in 1 in. The shed is all out of gun oil for some reason... I have clock oil if this doesn't work
Jani, do you pour from the key side, or take the door card off? We Brits are pretty noobish at such things (or maybe it's just me

Re: jack frost locked me out
With my superior paint skillz I did made image to you, it tries to represent a door from car...

If majority of this board's active members are having issues with car doors when it is barely below 0C, then I would say it is not only you Chris, it has something to do with not having such weather too often
I had serious issues with my french crap doors year ago, but I managed to fix that, however it took several bottles of lock defroster and then plenty of gun oil.
Reasons why gun oil is best to job is that gun oil is very low viscous, it stays low viscous even when it is very very cold and it does not collect dust very easily.
I believe that rifles are still allowed in there even they did ban all fun guns (bastards), so there should be also gun oil too. Gun oil is great to many other places, door hinges, gear/brake cables of mountain bike etc.
I don't know how well WD40 will work, it can clean the lock, but I doubt it will keep it clean and dry very long, but test here shows that it does not melt the ice too well.
Some stuff I found about WD40, locksmith talks:

So, you will need to flush all the grease out on a warmer day. I am
not an expert on lubricants but I suggest flushing with WD-40 (put a
cloth towel below the key-way) then run key in and out and turn 2-3
times, flush again and repeat process 2-5 times. Finally, apply a
lubricant such as triflo. (I also do not consider WD-40 a lubricant).
