Like jtbo said, most problems occur with the piping and sewer systems which will freeze easily if there are any defects in insulation.
What insulation ???
There are pipes running here and there, but there are no insulation, main water pipe runs in basement, which has 0 insulation and 0 heating, as this is build in 1950's there was no water closet originally, so it was added at some point during 1970's, WC floor is near subzero temps and sewer pipe has only sand around it, I just can't get my head around about how it is not freezing constantly
I was in a hotel (expensive one, company's christmas thing) earlier this week, there was insanely hot indoor temp, something like +25C as I'm used to +18-20C there was some heavy sweating because of that.
My shower is downstairs and upstairs and downstairs is connected with non heated or insulated space, it is quite odd sensation when running upstairs with towel around you, feet are freezing to stairs like being glued with instant glue and hair is freezing solid.
Warm welcome to visit Finland during our winter, swimming is increasingly popular hobby:
Phoned mother today and she told that she did swim also this morning in -27C temp that was in her place during that time, complained that her swimming shoes got stuck on ice, but claimed that it was not cold at all
