Hilarious bodgery

From what I remember a 1.4 starter is a bit of a pain getting access to one of the bolts when the engines in the car... been a while though!

Super bodge to the rescue.

Surely if you can do that changing the starter motor will be easy? Never changed one on the 1.4 but i can do the F7R one in like 2 or 3 mins.

Oh nice horn ring too :D

Access is bugger as steve said, and ive got limited tools.
Took John, who knew exactly what he was doing, about 20 mins. one bolt in perticular seems to be a bugger.

Still, not much choice atm. What the rain stops, Ill have to have a crack at it. Strandedness sucks.

Ok, so the starter is swapped.

Lovely day for it.

That went well.

BUT

The cars developed more pressing problems. :?

Now this has only happened on the last quarter of a 15ish mile journey (there AND back) today.

Symptoms:

In pressing the accelerator when cruising, nothing immediatly happens. Theres a pause, then theres a surge of power (accelerator held steady), then power drops, then surges. This carries on unless you really gun it. Really gunning it brings stready acceleration. Untill you back off.

Theres a sound from somewhere underneath that John recons sounds like the bellhouse bearing being fooked. (again, this sound only manifests after 20-30 mins running.

The car is hard to start from warm and withought throttle, will die immediatly.

Seemed to struggle at junctions, a LITTLE bit, but never stalled on the road. Only when I got to destination, turned ignition off and tried to restart.

Might be worth noting its very hot today.

Got a long journey planned tomorow.

Anyone have any Ideas?

Sounds bit like your carb base would been warped, could be some other carb related sealing problem too, for example is your carb top plate came to loose? Or whatever that issue was with 1.4 where you needed to re-tighten those screws at top of carb?

Those kind of symptoms I have had always when carb has not been sealed well from every seal that it has, sucks air from wrong place and when opening throttle airflow changes and upsets completely fuel mixture.

It can be some vacuum hose leak too, if that happens after throttle butterfly, generally I would think problem is somewhere between throttle butterfly and intake valve, somewhere it is sucking air where it should not be.

I doubt that it would be fuel delivery problem as booting it will clear the issue. Idle mixture, perhaps, but you can't do anything to that before air leaks are checked with great caution and carb checked, specially for base warp as only way to get idle mixture right is to get everything affecting it right first.

Maybe ignition can cause bit of issues too, was it now 1.4 where there was restrictor in hose going to renix unit?

Something along those lines, I would start from air leaks as it has most severe effect and others are harder to diagnose properly if there is air leak present, also air leaks are more or less known to be issues with older carb engines, kind of like Achilles heel of this technology, imo.

Thanks very much for all that J.
Forum searches brought up the 1.7 carb as having the base warping problem, but couldnt find refernce to the 1.4.
Mustnt have been looking hard enough!

1.4 top plate comes loose, it does sound like either that or a crack in your spaceman tubing to me. Grab the air filter and give it a wobble, if nothing apart from the engine moves all is good, then look down drivers side to the ali tubing that goes to the air filter. After that, just look at the vacuum hoses around the air filter and carb.
