Built to a budget and not very well at that,

Those ol' W123s are the last of the properly engineered Mercs.

Can't argue with the Germans mind, badge engineering at its best.
Premium brand
Anything made after 1998 is not worth paying a dime.

For older merc parts are not so expensive, especially from 3rd parties and those are often rather good parts. Big front wing was something around 63£ or so some years ago and there is always availability, it is not expensive if you can get it with money.

It just does not hit my spot, too sterile.

Of course there are 80's S-classe, which is very reasonable car. I like quiet with plenty of room, so that is also one key points it being reasonable.

However as we live in world that is far from perfect, I probably have stick with garaging 360 and having french torturing machines for rest of life for dailys.

I owned this from 2000 to 2009:
a 280 W114 160bhp

Fuel was around 12-14 L/100km, but other than that it didn't cost much to run as nothing went wrong!

Sold it to pay for restoring the Vario :?

Almost every Mercedes here was a diesel until we joined to EU and people started to import old cars from Germany.

I have seen even Pontiac TransAm with a Nissan diesel engine and bed for lawnmower etc instead of boot.

Yeah. You could (and still can with a bit stricter limitations) also register a Volvo 245 for example as a van if you removed the back seats. Before the law was changed you could install a fold out seat "for temporarily use" in place. So van taxes with a passenger car. Nowadays temporarily seat is allowed but no upholstery or paddings etc...

Those pickup Camaros and Trans-Ams are even uglier in person.. :D There's one always parked nearby.

There is Camaro, where you can really see how nicely length has been increased and how stylish that bed is:

Originals are quite beautiful at least from distance, but even for lower price I can't think why I would buy such destroyed piece of automobile, but some people thought it being great idea.

Our new tax system increases yearly payments of those quite steeply now, from ~100 euros to near 300 euros if I'm not badly mistaken. Gross weight is what tax is now based, no matter if you have always empty van, you pay from possibility to carry loads.

I could of register my french crap to van too, but there is no point anymore as yearly tax from owning such vehicle is same, surely other tax because you happen to own it would still decrease, but it is only matter of time when that too is going to change.

But still, I can't understand why anyone would do that to a car that they did to those Camaros/Firebirds and such.
