You need to get the backrest welded up again if you go for the 'grinder' technique, or it ends up being hopelessly floppy, and ultimately unsafe.

I just gave Adam the part number, and I can't be bothered to look it up...ADAM! :D

cheers

I didn't weld mine after grinding. It doesn't woble at all. It's very sturdy. It might be a little less strong but I don't expect it to be unsafe.
Leather, leccy windows and mirrors, snowcap, foglights, open air filter, black roof upholstery. What more do you want? >a 2.3 turbo!

I can't see how it would be less safe than no headrests. I mean, if they were to break in an accident as your head flys back, surley it would be better to reduce the impact than to have nothing

I don't know about Japper's car (I'd love to know HOW it's ok...), but my backrest became VERY floppy. You're chopping through the steel girder which provides the majority of the structural integrity...I can't see how that can't fail to funamentally compromise the safety of the backrest. For those who don't know, a saloon has an additional metal skin between the passenger compartment and the boot, to which the backrest is bolted.

In the event of an accident, any weight in the boot would have bent it out significantly, at best. There was also no way to re-engage the backrest., and any force applied to the backrest simply bent it to the point where the pins no longer lined up. Maybe my cutting wasn't accurate enough, but it was within 1mm?

cheers
