Ok, update ive messed around with it for hours and hours and found serveral problems all secondery to the water issue..
dist cap oily, plug gap too small i mean tiny, renix voltages off, then no petrol.
fixed all the above. got the engine as dry as i could splutterd it into life, then died and splutterd and died then used my best friend redex while it was alive ran it for about anhour, anoying everyone i might add.
and she seems good!
no more back firing and flames so its a result.

I can't believe how lucky you are!!!! - I figured you'd kill a valve if you were lucky, could have been much worse.
I recommend you keep a close ear on it for the near future just in case there is some undetected damage that suddenly becomes apparent.

Great to hear she's running again!
Dstributor cap being oily could well be a worn camshaft seal. Not too big a job.

How exactly would you kill a valve? Rods are what you'll bend when you hydrolock an engine.
If it ever happens again, whip the plugs out, and spin it over on the starter until it's all out. It shouldn't take long. With the plugs out, there should be no issue. Open the throttle if the little scrotes have filled the intake. It's a novel one that, granted.
cheers

Probably wrong, but I figured it in my head as a hydraulics problem. i.e. small area vs big area, when the same pressure is applied to both, the valve/seat interface will experience a greater force than the rods. Therefore, I figured that the difference in forces between the two areas is probably more likely to see a valve and seat damaged than a rod (only applies to cylinder on compression stroke)
I expect thats wrong but I can't be bothered to give it more thought at the second, lol

James is correct its the rod or even the crank that will give way. In the case of my old 2ltr lump it was both that went. The rods twisted and the crank was forced out of alighnment!!!!!
The reason is the cylkinder is sealed and there is no way the water can be compressed.

which is the same reasoning I had for why a valve would die, though that really only applies to compression stroke.

Interesting thought....the valve is thinner, and you'd think you'd just "burst" it. I can see the logic. Doesn't seem to happen that way though
That sounds fine Will...just needs a good run
cheers

yeah, it is interesting that rods always seem to break first even though they are pretty hefty compared to lots of other bits.
Either way he was very lucky to have gotten away with no damage
