No problems with bonnet up while testing...Have you checked for some sort of bonnet short?
Obviously a solid short would probably go on fire, but it may be a resistive one through carbon or something (after arching has burnt it up).
You should really check the current while the car is running and driving and off of course.

The charge may well be 14.x volts but at a ridiculously low current. Check the wiring from alt to battery for knackeredNess. Hmmm. Boot light staying on? Glove box light occasional sticking on? Other push switch operated lights? Hmmm. Heated seat relay sticking? Window demist relay? Have fun.

I think I know what's wrong. You can't measure a sensible charge voltage because...you don't own it anymore
