Re: My new 340 (Val)
The technician told me the soot that will eventually build up in the system will complete the exhaust note. Deeper bassy note.

I also managed to a get piece of carpet large enough to cover up most of the exposed metal of the stripped interior. It just looks like a giant spacious boot now

Re: My new 340 (Val)
thats looking really good!! i see that you also had the problem of the low section of the standard exhaust, people keep telling me mines fallen off because its that low
but im going to be chopping up the standard system to make a side exit (to prevent exhaust catching on the floor when its lowered) do you think the standard silencer that lives on the back of the car would fit in the tunnel? as you had a silencer in your tunnel from standard - is it the same size silencer or smaller?

I was reading your posts and firstly I must say 'Respect!' on all the diy especially the welding. I know I'd a bit scared to do it myself.valman wrote:thats looking really good!! i see that you also had the problem of the low section of the standard exhaust, people keep telling me mines fallen off because its that low![]()

I assure you the exhaust has not fallen off

The silencer in the tunnel is definitely smaller than the one in the back! I honestly don't think you would be able to fit (well..safely anyway) the rear silencer in the tunnel (keeping a safe distance from the propshaft of course) on your 340 (with a 3 inch drop? Am I right?).
I was thinking side exit too but the 'bow' like beam in the rear suspension (don't know the proper term

I assure you the exhaust has not fallen offMany people have pointed that out to me aswell. Its just because its lowered. In fact it wouldn't have been possible for me to move it any higher either.

not sure on the suspension drop as of yet - was going to cut a couple of coils off or so no idea how much that will be (hopefully not more than 3 as that means ill have 0 suspension travel

i know what you mean about the bow - leaf spring? either way i also saw that issue so again will need looking at, seeing as my sill needs repairing that side anyway possible make a notch for it

Re: My new 340 (Val)
@valman: I use to call it the leafspring too. Maybe I was right
I think you might get away with using the rear silencer under the tunnel with the drop. I would go slowly over bumps tho

Rainy day, wet roads and a simple RWD setup. It was always going to be F.U.N!

Re: My new 340 (Val)
nice! liking the exhaust like! makes me wish i could afford 300 quid. I'm starting a welding course in September as it definitely WILL come in useful with these cars.
And aye i'm pretty sure you's are on about the leaf springs

You should be able to make an exhaust yourself. Looks fairly straightforward.Nimminz wrote:nice! liking the exhaust like! makes me wish i could afford 300 quid. I'm starting a welding course in September as it definitely WILL come in useful with these cars.

Just a quick question. Are 340's setup to understeer?

I need power!
My current stock has 0 oompf. A Volvo turbo conversion would be super nice. Are there firms out there that would undertake such a job? I've heard Renault lumps aren't all that good.

Re: My new 340 (Val)
Best not get a 480 turbo lump then... it's a Renault engine.eph_tom wrote:I need power!

Redblocks will fit, but require a fair amount more work. Then again, if my theory is anywhere near right, stock 340 engine mounts can't deal with the bigger Renault engines either...

F7R s any good? What about the gearbox for one of those engine conversions?

Re: My new 340 (Val)
The engine is about as sweet as they come. The way mines set up there is lots of torque low down, you can drive it round town all day every day below 2grand and not have any issues with traffic. It just behaves. Let it start to rev and it pulls like anything, at Santa Pod it happily beat Foggy's V70R and in the lanes she'll confuse most things that arn't 7 shaped as the package has a significantly better power to weight compared to the 80's hot hatches.
Depends how you drive it though, I'm hard on mine and expect it to be a daily too. 18,000miles later and I've just gone through a prop and a bellhousing in 4 weeks but I'm pretty certain thats the stock mounts/drivelines fault and certainly isn't the engines.
