Volvo's 343RC with Renault engine was rwd but there were some 4x4s with Volvo engines. This one is from Finland:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/volvo/3 ... 43_4wd.jpg

Text in Finnish though. It made 380hp@6500-8000rpm naturally aspirated, 2.8l, two 2x50mm Weber, Front diff is from BMW 320 and rear diff is made by ZF and diff is made of titanium. Con rods were also titanium. It also had dry sump and 5-speed Getrag racing gearbox and 16V R-Sport head. In text they talk about plans for turbocharging, I don't know if they ever turbocharged one but estimated power they would have got was 580hp with turbo. It says that the turbo was tested with that engine too but the R-Sport head had some problems (I guess heat problems) so it didn't work well with turbo straight forward.

I asume that must have been with the Mi16 engine. I must admit the BX with the TD engine was quick for what it is needed another gear to get better top end.

I wouldn't say it'd have to be the mi16 to eat 360s. My 405 1.6 wasn't much slower than the 360glt. The same (94bhp) engine in a BX (extremely damn light) would give similar to GLT performance (10.8 to 60). I believe theres a test about somewhere 360glt vs Bx 1.6 vs Rover 216.. needless to say the 360 was out of its depth.

There is also someone who has built a golf twin engined who does a bit of drag racing with it. He seems to think the balace between the engines is not so critical.
A project for the brave
You mean the blue mk4? Bigdub I think it twas called, looked an intresting concept, never saw it run though. There was a twin 2.0 nova a few years ago

Well.........by 21 I've had........
1995 Fiat Cinquencento 899 cc of brutish power! Cheap to insure and run, passed my test in it. I believe it lives on after I abused it and dragged every last drop of power from it's strong little engine. However my real passion was to emerge, the Volvo's started.......
A 1989 360 GLT, then a 1986 GLT a scrapper for parts, then a 1987 GLT with a diesel engine, a 1988 GLT (now Carls), 1989 GLT saloon, 1989 G plated white GLT in use now, and a 1989 340 Vario, more to follow. Sadly I must include a non Volvo vehicle in my collection soon, a van is required, it needs to fit an 8 x 4 sheet easily, so hiace, transit sort of thing.

There are some very interesting lists on here! And Mick, I didn't realise you'd had quite so many cars!

Pete ,
you could always buy my toyota lucida , 8x4 is a piece of cake with the seats down , it dosent look like a van and if you had a late night at work the seats make a double bed ( it even has curtains !!! ), 2.2 tdi lump and eight seats ,
if your work is slack you could even make a bit of money doing a few airport runs and a bit of luxury mini cabbing .all yours for £3,500

Hmmmm! Very tempting, a mate of mine who is a carpenter has a Ford Galaxy, which is pretty good for it's load carrying capabilities with the seats down, but an 8 x 4 is a struggle in it at all. They never lay between the arches on the floor in there though. The one thing about a people carrier is the high loading level, so the height of items can be an issue, ie sideboards, and tallish cupbaords, or deep when laid down. Very tempting though mate I must say. I don't know what insurance would be like on one of those beasties either, plus all my mates would want me to drive on nights out for obvious seating capabilities!
