Cheers for the comments guys, Ive got a new daily hack which come in the form of a 460 GLE which is surprisingly nice, very comfortable and easy to drive. Because of this the 340 will be coming of the road for some serious work to prepare it for retro rides, so watch this space.
Pics of new car.
Cheers Dan

Understeer = major lose

But i drive this one totally different to the 340, 340 kind of likes being driven with a bit of passion but this one doesn't so i take everything slow and easy plus the 1.7 loses all grunt once you hit 4000rpm. ill grab some interior shots tomorrow, it is very clean only on slight patch of rust.
Cheers Dan

Understeer isn't too bad on those. I ran a 440GLT for a year or so, £75 from and auction
If it's multi-point injected then it can be quite brisk, easy to spin the wheels up on launch, likes to spin the offside one especially. Safe cars. My parents had a
BIG front impact in one of those and walked away unscathed.
They have loads of different electrical motors which do mysterious things for mysterious reasons which I never bothered to find out about - it was a disposable car - hearing them whining away at random times was a little disconcerting at first, but you get used to it.

I had a base model 440 ages ago. I bought it for £25 from a bloke at work. It took a hell of a lot of punishment until the diff seized somehow. Really good at jumping, I found.

Nice, I like it! Don't see many "phase 1" 400s around these days ...
I've heard gearboxes give up the ghost fairly easily.

Cheers for the comments guys, she is a 1.7 with the carb so no injection or anything like that, just rolling her standard, may put some 440 alloys on but nothing else.

400 series trivia (rivet counting alert!).
It was only fairly recently that someone pointed out that from 91-93 (or so) the 440 had the same front as the 460. The first few years it was really angular, then it got softened up shortly after the 460 was launched (to look like the 460), then they both were made to look (kinda) like an 850.
cheers

Floorpan is off the 480 coupe - but a 440 is actually lighter than a 480 - and arguably looks better too.
The rear arches rot out, but it doesn't seem to matter much.
They can go very fast:

PS - If you
have to buy one, go for the 1.8 multipoint injection. They're reputed to be quicker and be less likely to go bang than the 2.0 - but I'm sure there will be people on here who will disagree with that.
