Remember that we had -28.8C already at November?

Week's average temp is mild -13.9C as we had two days around -5C pretty much around the clock, current month's average is -10.6C, which is only few degrees colder than average, but let's see how whole month will shape up, if we keep getting cold chills like this, then we get perhaps again record cold month, November was already 2nd coldest in 100 years at this location, December might be too as it usually gets really cold around Christmas and especially around new year we start to see effect of absent sun, if similar cold chill hits us then, it would be no surprise to see -30C broken.

Bit earlier temp got up to -19C and we got immersively dense fog, yes a fog, wet fog that is, how fog was not transforming to ice, is beyond me, but it certainly put ice coating over everything and you can only guess how cold that feels on your face, luckily strong wind was missing, that would made things interesting, ice mask anyone?

Ive only experienced "wet fog" once.
Wet enough to need wipers when going through a bank.
Might has well have been inside a cloud, as visability was nil.

Only lasted a few seconds but was very freaky.

Maybe you get that more on south then?

I get quite often this when driving on road, sometimes last for 200km and some places gets even more dense and as I'm living on place that is relatively high above sea level, but around my place is large hills in every direction + lot of swamps and lakes, here there is often constant layer of fog just sitting above this place, easily seen when driving home as edge of valley one can see cloud bit above tree tops that just sits there.

Image

You can see here how I'm edge of valley and how dense clouds cover where I live (down there, middle of that large forest area:

http://jtbo.pp.fi/images/road_pics/valley_of_mist.jpg Photo is way too big for board to handle...

BTW, it is quite 'fun' to bicycle that hill up and down, have done that several times when riding to nearest proper shop, that is 30km from where I live and we have only that kind of hills, up and down, constantly, drive 130km and you struggle to see a hill that locals call a hill :D

-21.6C currently, in two days should be -30C or more, who knows how it really is.

edit: Our landscape is quite boring white at the moment, everything is white and even sun does not manage to get above trees, I thought today was cloudy, until step outside and saw sun lit treetops and that was at middle of the day, I can't see sun from my yard at this time of year as there is too many trees

2nd pic is taken at bit before 1pm, problem is that the sun is not getting enough high and as you can see there are rather many of them trees, chopping them all down would take around three zillion years at minimum

Sun is above horizon 5 hours, 9:42 it rises and 14:47 it sets down, it would require rather long treeless area to be able to see it. When going up north, there it never rises, there is eerie blue glow during the day, but no sun for several months, but then again at summer it never sets down, think about our heatwaves, no night at all

Are they serious?

Hmm, Express, it is newspaper which you would except to seriously report about pink elephant driving a bus? What I have read cold chill should not be as bad this year than what it was last year in UK, but truth is that nobody really knows.

I'm rather more concerned by BP managing to stop the Gulf stream.

Erm............that's not good,in fact,it would be safe to say it's real bad.

I'm rather skeptic about that one, there is satellite data from gulf stream:
http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/avhrr/gs/averages/index.html

It is not stopped, imo. It is just bit cold and that is not very good

Anyway there was -24.5C at house, I drove 300km just to put new water to cats and fresh food, maybe I have gone crazy, well put also new cat house heater into cat house so that they will not freeze to death, poor creatures are still too afraid to come inside and I have to work, so it is bit of problematic situation, if I could get them inside to house, there would be no problem, well not so big problem as there was only +3.8C inside the house, had only one heater running, at Sunday evening there was +21C, with 600w heater temp dropped so fast, so quite good that I visited on house, would been expensive if pipes would froze.

Co worker told me they had this morning -29C, this is not even cold, Sunday is going to be cold one.

This week's average temperature is now -18.2C, has been again -26.3C at coldest time, at one day temperature did not rise much above -24C and again cold tightens it's grip as at the moment there is nearly -18C and forecast is that it will get much colder at coming days.

Well you guys are used to it, and its fairly predicable. We have no winter tyres, limited snow clearing plant and limited salt supplies.

In N.Ireland we haven't had snow in Nov for a decade or more, and December is rare. Last night we had about 5", the most in 25 years, we are normally milder than most of the UK, being exposed to the Gulf stream ocean currents. Tonight the predicted temp is -8C, sounds mild to you I'm sure, but our older houses are not well insulated and quite drafty, especially with poor quality work done in repairs and modifications. AFAIK I've never seen lower than -4C.

Speaking of bicycling, I went out to pick up my 940 estate from my mates house after drinking at a nearby bar the previous night (Saturday). Most of the roads where ok, but my road hadn't been treated and had severe patches of ice, I thought I could manage it but the bike disappeared right out from underneath me on a prolonged patch of ice. However I had a good landing and was going at walking pace, no damage done :-)

-25C or colder is quite rare, not even every winter we have that in my location, but now we have had lots of those and very early, these kind of weather is more common for January and February, we are terrified to what is coming at January and February, might be near -40C and that is not impossible, it has happened here before, country's record is something like -47C, imo.

My house has 100mm sawdust insulation, that is floor, roof, walls, with today's requlations there should be something like 600mm of sawdust

Of course houses built after 1900 in UK have quite poor insulation as weather has been rather mild there, some might have almost no insulation as all. Our modern walls are 0.21W/m2k or even better, heating is also calculated for 60 degree temperature difference, so that way we have not much issues, but this kind of cold really goes to pockets, need to heat house really a large amount, here is under +10C now and my fingers feel numb...

The Earl of Sterling says the G/S has stalled and didn't reach Ireland.

I believe him over your data Jani.

He is of Scottish ancestry and your scientists are not.

I rest my case m'lord.

Predicted brutal winter in July when conventional forecasters/scientists spouted about an Indian summer for UK.

Go figure.
