1988 Vari-Ho - Same running issues return. *11.08.10*
Spent so long trying to resize photos, that I cant be bothered to type anything.
Back in the game.
Big cheers to Liam for running me around in the boneshaker. And helping me switch the wheels.
And to John for selling me the car.
Goodfellers.

Wheel (can I have that boss back please? )
And if I can get in touch with dai/if FJ has a spare half day at some point in the future, then id like a -2 hit.
Quick she is.
Much quicker than my old manual B14.
Laughs up past a ton and presses on remarably swiftly for what it is.
And idles silently. (wierd I know)
Really like it.
A lot.

Wahey!
Only drawback whilst enjoying this fastness, you'll also be enjoying some eye-watering fuel consumption. It's good to watch manual drivers fall back on every gear change while you glide away from the lights.
Like the wheels, what's the difference in overall diameter compared to the old ones? Interesting to know which way the gearing has gone and by how much.
(Watch now as VNDs left leg wastes away due to being unemployed. He'll have huge upper-body strength soon though! - PAS is for girls )

i dunno. its made the steering a bit lighter and its more fun to drive.Like the wheels, what's the difference in overall diameter compared to the old ones? Interesting to know which way the gearing has gone and by how much.
So Im guessing the profile is at least a td smaller.

Take the long way home or did you rag it? On my trip over I was recording around 33/34 mpg in Abby, but the journeys were long and mixed M/A/B road stuff.volvosneverdie wrote:quarter of a tank between johns and mine.............
You sir, need a trip computer.
Well in standard trim it took some work keeping up with the fella in the brooner.volvosneverdie wrote:i dunno. its made the steering a bit lighter and its more fun to drive.

You, Sir, are an animal! For those who don't know, that's roughly 20 miles, 20 miles on ¼ x 45 litres = 20 miles on 11¼ litres (2.475 Gallons) = 8.08mpg.
(When the yellow lamp on the dial comes up and stays up, you have around ¼ of a tankful left, so methinks there's something non-linear about that quarter). But I may just give the Guinness Book of Records a bell in any case.......
Glad you're enjoying the car, it's good that it's finally with someone who'll love it properly.
By the way, have you grown tired of the annoying beeper and the flashing red lamp on the console yet?
John.

Re: 60k 1988 Vari-Ho 340
Google maps says 21.7 miles.
The lamp came on when I got home.
We came home via the most direct route.
I cruised mostly between 60 and 70, but did blast it up past a ton a couple of times.
im guessing there was 1/2 a tank in when I left?
So either theres a leak, or im driving it very wrong.

Re: 60k 1988 Vari-Ho 340
Although mine has a old Smiths dash. My low-fuel warning light comes on, before it hits the reserve segment. If I fill-up from first flicker it'll only take 32L. If I run it down to the bottom of the reserve, I seem to only get maybe 36L. That does leave a mysterious 9L swimming around the bottom of the tank.
Really need to test something properly. These gauges tend to go from F to H very quickly and have a mysteriously huge reserve.

Re: 60k 1988 Vari-Ho 340
Hmm, I'd say there was certainly half a tank showing on the gauge, but whether that's slightly less than an actual half is anyone's guess. The only way to check for certain is to fill it 'til the pump clicks off, drive it a few hundred miles, then fill it again at the same place and work out what it's using, but I'd tend to concur with MacP's economy figures for driving like a granny.
I guess it all depends on how long you take to get it from 60 to the ton, on your private test track of course.....
