Bourght a 1988 360 GLT

Post by Nimminz » 21 Jun 2010 03:15 pm

After lots of searching and much appreciated help from members on here, I found a lovely Volvo 760 GLT in more or less perfect condition.

47K from new
2 owners
Last owner, an elderly lady, used the car for shopping only, not driving in rain, winter or night time. Has done 500 miles since last MOT in July 2009
Few small scratches and tiny patch of rust on rear bumper
one electric seat has dodgy wiring that needs correcting

Apart from that its great. 2 litre !!!

Really pleased with it. Picking it up soon, hopefully the weekend, just waiting on MOT which is included in sale along with 6 month's tax.

Hope to get to some meets soon
Matt

Id love to have a look round it at a meet coz as 360s go, that one really does look like a honey. :360:

edited haha

was thinking of my dads 740 and some how combined the two lol

cheers!

Yeah its imaculate really.

I did plan on modding it but i'm going over to the keep-it-standard side because its so nice.
Got volvo fire extinguisher in boot and everything lol

Nah will be doing a few little things

volvo alloys (200 series i think)
sunstrip (easily removeable)
Somehow find a way of tinting the lights yellow without it being permanent
Do the inside of the headlights black as i've seen on here and the 206 site.
Mount some different bulbs in addition to the fogs to use as daytime running lights (in same casing)
Tights over rear lights to tint haha
will be changing the origional tape deck to a new headunit and putting the sub in the boot.
Golf splitter
Possibly debadge rear and front grille

Not sure i'll have a hunt around for more inspiration

200 series rimz are no good man. Anything in 4x100 is what you want.
Yellow bulbs or tint pen on the lenses would work.
Everything else sounds pretty awesome.

get some dish on the corners!

Those wheels are Mk2 GLT alloys (Leos).
Yours is a mk3, I recon mk3 alloys is the only thing that lets mk3s down.
Leos are almost the coolest 300 wheel there is, and a bit hard to come by man, so get your hunt on.
I gave up and got Wellers.
Very cool though.

thanks, i'll keep me eyes peeled. with it being a mk3 is there no chance of those rear window louvres, they're class.

Will have to think about lowering too, read something about landrover springs and found a good guide on here about those blocks for the back. Had tortion bar on the peugeot and thats why it didn't get lowered, despite me having a set of springs which now roll round in my boot

the 2 litre is the same engine as in some 740's? looks just like me dads

sorry for all my questions and ponderings, i feel lost not being an expert like i was with the pug lol

Blocks the same, yeah. 360, 740, 940. So you could do a 940 2.3 turbo engine swap if you get bored.
Landrover SHOCKS, not springs man. Landrover fronts go on your Volvo rear. Superstiff and good for driftings but I dont recon Id fancy that hardness on a dailly.
Then agin, plenty of people do.

eurgh i sound like an idiot in this thread, first the title now writing springs rather than shocks.

Want to keep the comfort really just want it down a bit, will get looking for those blocks.

2.3 engine swap might not be as warmly welcomed by my insurance. the 2.0 GLT is cheaper than my 1.4 8v peugeot!

well blocks and shorter uprated front springs are freely available man.
Drop easily achieved. Anything lower than -2in might get you catching the exhaust. But if you're going side exit that might sort itself out.

That is a serious minter, IMO you are doing it a disservice to change anything on it. It might be worth a few bob in a few years. Keep it clean, don't ding it and get it rust proofed. Nothing wrong with those wheels I prefer them to the older ones.

BTW there should be no rust on the 'bumper' its all plastic on the outside.

Also I see the fan is switched off, I know some people do this and use the fan as a 'heater' control, but best to keep the fan on 1 all the time as a minimum. It helps to dry out the sills and stop the rot. Drive it regularly, and keep the miles coming on, also helps to reduce rot. if you leave it sitting any length of time in the rain it will start to go.

First thing to do is an oil+filter change with oil cleaner additive and get some revs on her, clean out that old lady driving.

Yeah thats what i'm thinking now. Any thing i do will be reversible and will keep any stuff i take out (like the tape player - i needs my tunes). Same with alloys, i'll give them a refurb ready to go back on if i ever sell it.

Rust is on the metal below the rear bumper

I always have the fan on 1 in my car so will be the same on this

It will be driven everyday, i do quite a few miles done 25K miles in a year and a half :D

It will get some revving and a good blast down the duel carriage way on the way home

Theyre good cars man. Ive never had one fail in any way. (apart from rust  ) Look after it and itll more than take care of you.
Safe, reliable, retro cool. All round daily win.
Like the fella says, keep it near enough straight and its free motoring. Youll get what you paid back or more if you keep it a few years coz good ones are getting rare. GREAT ones, well theyre out there to be found I suppose, but the numbers are dropping every year to rust and drifters.
