New 740 + Bodge. 27.08.10

Post by volvosneverdie » 23 Aug 2010 12:32 pm

Might as well turn this into a car thread.

my other car is now a 740.

ew, em, ea, pas, hs, tilting drivers seat, radio, headlamp protectors, etc etc etc.

And everything works.

Cheers to Filtyhjohn and his dad for selling me it for less than it costs to fill the tank,

I like that sticker. Ironic, and yet so so true........

Incidentally, that 740 of yours is exactly the same colour as the one I had years back! Is it a B200E waft-o-matic by any chance? Those cars are wonderful cruisers once you wind 'em up....
And I'm feeling rather envious!!

It is indeed dude.
Its eager enough if you punt it in 2 then switch to D at 40ish. Very good at motorway cruising Tom, youre spot on there.
Unbeliveably comfy too.

Good to hear, that 740 is bit annoying to park because of length, like also is 240, but that is when one is used to 300, which fits quite small spots. My 3dr however is bit annoying because of long doors, so 240 can fit almost better to narrow spots, it has shorter doors.

Black sticker at window is kind of camouflaged.

Yeah, it is a bit of a whale.
Very big (I park in an alley and ive knocked a few rubbish bins over trying to get out to work in the mornings).
The steerings actually really light, so getting int parking spaces isnt too bad.
Its just narrow gaps that it struggles with. :P

I think that you have power steering, were 700 series even made without power steering?

Good thing is that whale is shaped after the box, so it is really easy to figure out dimensions, imagine some of modern crap with such measures, would be quite annoying to try and guess where corners are

If you ever want more comfort with similar other features, then try 940, it has better sound insulation, suspension is more refined, imo. Still stupidly light steering. 960 would be of course nice, but petrol costs are truly a killer on that one, especially if you drive on city and short trips.

Yes. Power steering is a good thing on cars this size. Dont REALLY need it on a 300. but a 700 or 900 :?: YES!
Even the 740 drinks a lot of petrol with the automatic gear box. A 960 or 760 wold be worse??

960 has big 6 cylinder motor and it weights something around 1500kg, where 700 is 1300kg ? It really drinks up lot of juice. 760 had some B230 turbo unit or was it with PRV too? Even late model 700 and early 900 are pretty much the same, there are differences, weight is one, also 960 is bit of own model (like 340 and 360) unlike 760 which was more like better equipped version, like 340DL vs 340 GL. That is at least impression that I have.

Remember that 240 had no power steering as standard, only diesels and maybe better equipped models had one, but basic models they sold most in here did not have power steering.

I spent a lot of time pining over a facelift 960, but it was the fuel that stopped me in the end. Scary beasts!

Plus when I measured it up it would overhang the pavement by 3ft, my drive wasn't long enough ;)

Ummm, guys, how do you spend £600 to airflow meter in 700 series that has a PRV unit? One zero too many?

VND, take soft sponge and stuff it under loud pedal, that eliminates pretty lot of acceleration enrichment, no matter if it is carb or injection and smooths out throttle action, in city driving you can save ton of fuel by that and you still move almost the same, paint it black and nobody will even notice.

However I don't know if it will help much for you, depends bit how you drive. One can't dream to get decent fuel consumption on city with such car, it will take quite a bit petrol during warming up and at city it will probably never properly warm up so it will drink quite heavily. There diesel is a winner, it's fuel consumption does not increase at city as much as does petrol version, also diesel + automatic is really sweet combo and I like straight 6 sound of those. That reminds me, there is 760 turbo diesel too.
