Hello, new boy!

Post by Jonny f » 07 Sep 2010 03:01 pm

Hi all, Im new here and new to volvo's in general. I don't currently own one but i hope to quite soon. My dad's friend has an old 300 series (from what my dad says) and he is using it as a workhorse. I'm hoping to aquire its rwd goodness soon as hes getting a new motor.

Just a few questions really as i don't know what im looking for...

Whats the best engine? (insurance may be an issue on the 2.0l as im 20)

Best model?

Any specific mechanical gremlins i should look for?

Rust areas?

Ohh my names Jonny, i live in surrey, work at gatwick airport and im into cars and bikes (cycling ones).

My two current motors. Im planning on getting rid of the civic. All of the work (execpt paint) has been carried out by me with a little help from my dad.

Hello mate, welcome to the fold.

Very sexy Mini, and the Civic isn't half bad either for a rice burner  :D

I'm a Surrey boy too, so good to have more local boys with 300's.

Most of your questions are hard to give a straight forward reply as it all depends on what you are after. Rule of thumb (i think) is the more letters after the number, the better the spec of the car. The Top trim level is the 360Glt which has the 2ltr, but as you say your age may hinder insurance. I think the GLS is the same but carb rather than injection. I say i think coz i'm not sure but i know one of the anoraks will be along to correct me shortly  .

Mechanicaly they are pretty tough old tanks with the 1.4 having a timing chain rather than belt so less prone to breakage. Carb bases can cause running issues on 1.4 but mostly affects the 1.7. Rust wise they are getting on a bit, so just check the usual areas you'd normally look, wheel arches, cills, front wings/valance, floorpan, chassis rails these tend to go near the back where it splits in two. I think they are fairly rust resistant compared to a lot of cars of a similar age, but that said some can and do rust, badly. Most body panels are obsolete or hard to come by.

Hope thats some help.

Hi mate, welcome

I have the 2.0 Injection volvo 360 GLT. I'm 19 and my first car was a 1.4 peugeot 206 - cheaper to insure than a 1.4 civic. My insurance rose 15p when i changed to the volvo.
GLT is the top trim AFAIK (i'm still new to it all). GLT stands for 'Grande Luxe Touring' and is the sportiest, GLE stands for 'Grande luxe Executive' and is the most comfortable - or at least thats my understanding. IMO mk2s look better than MK3s and you CAN get a cool rear louvre thing for the back window on mk1s and 2s but they are extremely rare.

As for rust, the places mine is going is where the sill meets the back arch, rear valance and the orners of the boot, bonnet and doors where they have been bumped against stuff. If you can weld yourself it would help considerably - or at least be cheaper. I'm doing a welding course this year :D

Nice civic like! not been too much of a fan of minis but it looks good. Good luck with the 300!

:) cheers i don't like being a noob lol I like to know everything about the car, still plenty left. also aren't GLT an inch lower? still don't know what the 'S' in GLS stands for.

I think the petrol filler hose clips go on the 360s and leak petrol when you fill it right up.

cheers, i've been wondering for ages, been doing my head in. Best i'd come up with was 'shiney' just off looking at liam's front grille surround on his GLS lol

20mm is good enough for me :) Well, its not another inch to drop it when the money appears.

anyway, back to the thread, i'd keep the seats out the civic - lots of people like to put them in 300's to hold you better while sliding it *on private roads*

To keep the engine nice and cool, its quite large ;). Plus it looks a little different to most mini's.

Cheers for all the coments i shall let you now when i have more info on it. Just need to get my dad to find out about it.

Yeaaa im hoping to put the seats and wheels of the civic onto the volvo. Might sell the seats though to raise some funds as there worth quite a bit being typeR ones.
