Breakdown cover

Post by SoLaMaNdA » 24 Apr 2005 11:11 pm

Do any of you guys have breakdown cover that includes Europe? Every time I've tried to get a quote for even just 2 weeks its well inexcess of £150! I realise this is due to the car's age but is there a magic company that has reasonable cover. I've not had breakdown cover for 3 years and not had a problem I can't fix myself but with such an old car its risky.

I`ve not found anything really much cheaper than that - I seem to remember that it was about GBP70 for a 5 day trip last time I went over to Europe with my 340. Just a case of biting the bullet and coughing up I think.

I just boils down to how much hassle you are prepared to put up with
if things go tits up. In my case I did not fancy being stuck on an autobahn with the family in the car, while I tinkered with it trying to get it going again. If I was alone, it would have been different.

Of course having a selection of likely spares and the tools to fit them will get you out of most problems - I do take a quite comprehensive spares box with me, ie

couple of plugs, spare lead, dizzy cap, rotor arm, fan belt, thermostat, cooling system sealer, hose and exhaust repair bandages, wire, fuses
& duct tape.

Its worth bearing in mind that many of the insurers will not repatriate the car if the cost of doing so exceeds the market value. this can be an issue with our "low value" cars.

Last year I drove 1200 miles in France with no cover but am wary of doing it again. Last year I had to bodge a 5" gash in the down pipe with exhaust seal/aluminium foil bandage!

1st call Direct, £35 for UK only, £50 for European. Includes Home Strat and onward travel etc, but not quite as good cover as the AA/RAC etc. However it is over £100 cheaper...........
