Cam gear

Post by jtbo » 06 Dec 2010 11:31 am

So now as I bought new camera and some gear, I thought that it would be nice to brass about know which kind of gear you all have at the moment?

Mine as follows:
Nikon D3100 with programmable remote, 18-55 Nikkor kit lens and Tamron 75-300mm tube.

Just bought this one so I can snap photos of your Ace Cafe while sitting on my sofa (102mm/1300mm Maksutov Cassegrain) sm34

Still waiting for stuff to arrive, I try to make some photos after that for sure.

Sorry dude, was asleep for this first time round.

I still have basically the same as I always had, but with a few pocket money toys added in the last 12 months (no fun expensive stuff as pennies been at a premium :()

So...

Canon 20D
18-55mm
75-300mm
Manfrotto 055 tripod with pan tilt head
Giotto monopod.

This years pocket money toys (which have made more difference than most of the other kit :?
Circular Polariser. Seriously, this is the best thing in the entire world. I adore it ;)
Pentax f/1.8 55mm. Cost me a pint, on an M42 thread. Epically sharp, just manual aperture and focus. AF lights still work in the cam though.
Flash. Can't remember what it is, some fairly large Jessops special I think, but given to me by a mate who used to be into film cameras.

Today my new 1300mm 'lens' arrived, quite handful to hold as there is no plastic parts, except the lens cover, when you hold such equipment on your hands outside where is -20C and you don't use gloves, metal surface starts to burn your hand...

So I tried to take some photos with it, but it really needs a proper mount, superlight tripod is not up for the task, even my small astronomical mount is bit light for it as it tends to shake because of mirror movement generates small force. Need to learn how to use one properly yet.

Mirror lock up bud, that way the mirror will go up on the first push of the shutter and the exposure happens on the second push. If you don't have a cable release, set the camera to timer, when mine is on timer and mirror lock up the timer is reduced to 2 secs and sets the mirror off first, then the shutter those 2 secs later.

It refuses to comply, I choose mirror lockup from menu, then press shutter once to open the mirror, after that no matter how much I press the button it just writes on screen that mirror is locked up and refuses to take any photos, had same with D40 and never managed to figure out how to get it to comply with my orders.

That would help quite a bit there.

edit:
Had not much time to play with it today, there was lot of ice crystals on air, around moon there was quite bright halo effect, but setting shutter to really quick and ISO to maximum I managed to grab a lot of noise and bit of moon too, that is 5MB file, so only url.

When I have more time to play with that, I will make some proper photo of moon, also remote launcher is still on delivery and timer would need to be at least 15 seconds to let shaking to stop.
