HI guys and gals, Ive been trying to get a thread insert (not volvo related!) retapped to a suitable size, ive been round the machine shops in selby and the college were i spent alot of years and no one seems to have anything the right size,
Im looking to get a 3/4x16tpi hole, re drilled and tapped to 1" bsf (10tpi)
can anyone help on here? I cant afford to buy a set of taps that ill only use once!I know a few people on here have a good source of engineering bits so if they could help out id be very grateful!
its the internal thread on this collar here,
thanks!
Ben

£8 in carbon from Tracey bud!

Might be the cheapest way. If its's a through hole you'll get away with just the taper

aye id looked at tracey tools, the hole is indeed through but 40mm deep/thick.
being a tight fisted yorkshire man im loathed to spend money ive not got on a tap ill use once!
do you know anyything about the strength of duel threads - ie lh and rh in the same thread? some people use them on their lathes, just doesnt seem a good idea to me!

Fraid I don't bud... but there is a lot of meat in a 10tpi. What is the application?

The title of this thread sounds like a plea from Graham Norton............. That is all.

I was waiting for a VND reply!
its part of my new lathe, its a spindle thread adaptor.
external (m33x3.5) goes into the chuck.
the internal thread, currently 3/4x16tpi, needs to be 1" bsf to match the spindle thread on the lathe.

Makes sense, the headstock spindle on my metal lathe is 1" BSP too, hence why I know the price. Not bought one yet though, but I need to do a faceplate for my 4-jaw.
Not something you want to come flying off then

its bsf, not bsp!
im proably going to end up buying a tap, hopfully ill get away with 1st and second tap. cant afford all 3!
new lathe -
definatly dont want it coming off! top speed 2.9k rpm also could to with a LH threaded one aswell!

I meant BSF.... silly standards.
All things useful in life can be dealt with in either metric, or Whitworth. Mine is an early one of these
http://lathes.co.uk/ideal/ infact, the first picture pretty much sums it up. Old skool awesomes
