360 on track

Post by jtbo » 08 May 2005 02:28 pm

I took my car to race track today, got few ok laps, at beginning corners felt tighter than remembered from last year ;)

Engine however is leaking oil and I needed to return early, perhaps they did not fixed those seals when I took car into garage for cam change.

Anyway here is link to film: (scroll all the way down)

For example bookatrack, is it still alive? Then I have heard from Sunday on track or similar named event, those are in UK.

One day on track costs 50 euros in here, often it is 20min driving and 40mins waiting as there is often many others too.

This time I was only normal car, there was actually 3 cars, one Legends class racer, one race prepped Mini Cooper (old classic mini) and me :P

Then there was around 30 motorbikes, few race prepped Superbikes too, not good to go track at same time with that kind of monster ;)

Legends car was not so fast, until it hit the corner, I was wayyy slower there and that braking... :D

I'm getting problems with my tires, 2,7bar at front is too little, while 2,5bar at rear is ok, balance is however fine with those settings, but one right hander is a bitch, my tyre sidewall was touching tarmac there. Maybe 185/60/14 is not best size for track use. Oh yes, rear tires did overheat, small debris came of from them, I need that LSD installed before next track day, too much wheel spin, tires won't last ;)

Engine is now good, only I need to top fuel pressure and perhaps change location of fuel pump as near 5000rpm it won't gain rpm's so eagerly.
It still goes to 6200rpm very easy, I hit limiter few times, balanced bottom end would help there too, no money for that :(

I could brake later, these new Ferodo performance pads seem to work out nicely, however if I would been braking harder it could be that brakes would be too hot in 2-3 laps. Those wented discs are one thing I need now.

Intake sound is also very loud, without helmet it would been painful to my ears ;)

Gearstick needs also some stiffening as I found it easy to mix 4th and 2nd when downsifting, centering feature is missing from sideway movement of gearstick.

Also that clutch needs adjustment, when changing to 3rd it was not gripping instantly.

Many other things too what I found that needs improving, but it was ok test and also I got megasquirt adjusted to bit better at full throttle and higher rpm's :)

No film from Mini, as it broke down after 1/2 lap :)

Not a bad video, I'm curious as to how you changed the instrument dials to white. I'm starting to envy a few things in that car of yours, the white dials and LSD.

There is white dials, just print them out in correct size to enough thick paper (word is carton?).

Installation is rather straight forward, first instrument panel is taken out, 2 electric connectors and speedometer cable need to removed, I do it underside of dashboard, just take carpet away and you get good space for hand.
Then disassemble instrument panel, there is 12 or 13 screws than need to open, then 'glass' and surrounding plastic will come off. Dials are attached with 2 very small screws each and screws are tight, also needles will come off with fork or similar tool. Be very gently with those as they sit tight but are still fragile, so when they come loose it usually comes with suprise and then is better to plan where to place fork so no damage will occur when that happens ;)

Installation of white dials is next, also remember that needles are positioned in certain direction, if you asseble them wrong direction your rpm or speedo is bit off and you need to disassemble whole thing again.

General guidelines are inspect from all angles before increasing force ;)

Perhaps little glue would be good as my dials tend to bend at winter time, when temperature comes from -20 to near 0C and RPM needle is not moving all the way, there is very little gap between needle base and dial background.

Instrument lights can be seen very well, you can get opaque blue or whatever colour lights by installing proper colour plastic behind dials, some inside structures are casting shadows so there is something that needs improvement, but other than that those are great, also checking speed is much easier ;)

No need to envy, I do have also loads of rust, and my engine/driveline/gearbox seems to be bit too loose + ton of other faults :D
Well, it is project so those are allowed, maybe someday I get all sorted ;)
