It sounds like an idle speed sensor issue to me.

Wwhn mine was playing up Adam suggested a few different ideas, the valve on the throttle body can get "sticky". Take the valve off and rock it back and forth in your hands, if it's got a sticky valve this can free it up.

I still reckon it's something to do with the speed dsensor in the back of the dash though.

I find this thread really interesting as I´m considering one of theese engines as a transplant for my -64 Renault 8.

But I´m a bit worried about the weight as the R8 is a bit heawy on the rear as it is.

How is the weight of the 1,8 16v compared withe original B14 engine of the 340?

It's quite an increase, about 2 or 3 times the weight. This isn't a major issue with 340s as they are designed for a bit more weight. With the long wheelbase on the R8 I think it would probably be ok for it and I'd love to see a screamer under the bonnet of one of those :D

2 or three times as much as the B14 sounds a bit on the heavy side I´m afraid.

At the moment it has a 956cc with about 43bhp so even a bog standard B14 would be a big upgrade.
