broady81's 340 rally car

Post by broady81 » 10 Apr 2011 02:00 pm

Hey guys,

Was speaking to theo last night, and realised that I hadn't got a thread up with my car(s). So here we go.

Bought a blue 1.7 340 back in November, with intent to road rally it. All was well and good, until it failed it's MOT on a number of things. While I was weighing up how much it would cost to get fixed, I came across a tidy looking 1.4. I decided, in my wisdom, that I would buy the 1.4, and use the 1.7 as spares, with the possibility of swapping engines at a later date.

Anyway, here is the 1.4 a couple of weekends ago before my first rally as a driver:

Amazing what Turtlewax can do

And here is a few during shots (you'll have to mind my ugly mug):

I've done what I would deem a "fair bit" of preparation. Tank and sump guards. Middle box removed. Brake line guarded. Lights relayed. Loads of other stuff that I'm sure would bore you all

If your lucky though, I might take some interior shots so you can admire my handywork :D

What d'yall think?

Thats clean! Real nice shine, car looks great. Nice bit of "whaaaaap" from the exhaust no?

Theo, Ive only got the one silencer before the right hander, so its a side exit. I would asume it doesnt sound to different from mine. personally, I think its awesome. Sounds like a V8 on tick over, only loud when you give it the beans.

I did yeah. Its a little ghetto, butu sounds great. Not your yobish "ricer" noise, its quite a deep rumble, very V8 like. (hard to believe  )

ive got a few middle sections in my unit, so with one im going to cut the box off and put a pipe in place and with the other ill cut it before the bend and weld a little bit of piping on so it comes out near the sill.

cool stuff. that'd do the trick. make sure its flush with the underside, inline with the jacking point. (not poking out). You dont want to get pulled for a dangerous object pointing out towards the people walking on the paths!

I got a local exhaust company to do mine. They cut the middle box out and replaced it with a straight section of the right bore. Nicely welded and properly sealed and clamped for £30. Can't complain.

The middle box had some nasty straight edges on it, and along with the tank, is one of the lowest parts on the car. Was scared into doing by a mate who warned be about some of the "whites" in Derbyshire (unsurfaced roads).

Sounds louder and is certainly a little raspier. Sounds the part I think, but then again, I did out of practicality rather than exhaust note

It ain't overly loud either. The noise restriction on the National B events I aim to do is usually around 98dB, and mine was safely under that with 87dB. I over revved it during the noise check too as I didn't have a rev-counter to work to.

On a 1.7, the bit whites like is the front of the mid box, and the 90 degree pipe from the mid box to the back box.

In a GLT... it's the rear diff cover plate

Nasty. Do you have a tank guard on Chris?

At the moment, I have a piece of dexion shelving bracket over my front to rear break line. A tip from a book I bought. Want to run it inside eventually.

I'm working on the break system currently. I really want to put discs on the back. Is it possible to put a 360 beam on there?

360 drums are a fit. And an improvement. They didnt come with disks at the back though.

Yeah, forgot the tank... Fake's looks like someone's used it as a snowboard

I run a complete 360 rear axle. There isn't any huge advantage to it apart from the larger discs, but the limiting factor isn't the brakes themselves, more the bias valve.
