Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
I just wondered what people around the country(s) are paying. Just been to fill the truck up for tomorrow and was fleeced to the tune of £101 for a tank of diesel.
Here the cheapest for petrol is £1.29 for unleaded (Asda, using a credit card to get 1p/litre off)
For Diesel the cheapest is £1.37 (sainsburys, Asda's is 1p more so not worth using card)
As the truck does 27mpg at all times, thrashed or old fart driving I'm getting pretty p*ssed off with this.
Because I've only done around 3 to 4,000 miles in the last year in the total in the volvos it's not been as bad (they also do 30-38mpg). But since last year the price has gone up so much again that long distance trips, ie Dorset and Cornwall this summer with the caravan are looking like costing a fortune at 22mpg.
Anyone using a 300 in day to day commuting short trips will also be feeling it.
Why is the population of this country so bloody apathetic and useless when it comes to getting p*ssed off? Has everyone just given up and the UK's become a zombie nation? Maybe everyone's just more scared about loosing their jobs. I just feel like every time I fill up I'm lining the pockets of bankers and oil speculators who continue to laugh at us mugs as we continue to pay taxes to allow the politicians to cover over their disasters.
Rant over, still interested to see what you're paying!

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
Finland prices, diesel bit over 1.4€/l last weekend cheapest that I saw along 450km route, statistics show that prices should be around 1.3€/l in many stations, haven't seen such.
Cheapest ethanol (e10) that nobody uses 1.5€/l and petrol (98 octane) with 5% ethanol 1.55€/l
But I have personally seen mostly those 1.6€/l along my routes.
We don't have proper petrol anymore, only that Solex killing stuff.
Whole country averages are almost 1.4€/l for diesel and almost 1.6€/l for that e10.
So, because of that, maybe better to make aerodynamics of car suck less?

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
I paid $1.60/Ltr yesterday at Caltex for 98octane. The bit that shits me is I can buy four litres of engine oil at the supermarket at a cheaper $/ltr. Petrol is left over muck from the refineing process!!!!?? It's a conspiracy I tell ya.................................don't get me started on the proposed carbon tax the Australian government are trying to write up.

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
Well I hate to disagree with the masses, and I would love everything to be cheap or free, but its just not sustainable and my personal opinion is that petrol is still too cheap. However I do not discount that a certain few individuals are getting rich in the process through some sort of corruption.
If I had the power I would change 2 things in the world
1. Ban interest on loans, currency is created when people do useful work, instead of when they borrow.
2. All finite resources would have increasing taxes applied to achieve a market demand such that they would last for say another 500 years. This includes land and stuff we take out of the ground.
The real problem with oil is we don't really know how much is left, and noone has a plan when we hit peak oil other than defend your sources with military might. Sure there are lots of tar sands and stuff, but the yield is very poor (ie they take alot of energy (oil) to refine). To be honest its too late to apply the 2nd change to spend the money on other energy sources.
The first change, would hopefully remove the need for geometric population expansion which is the real unsustainable root.
None of these will ever happen of course until we have a collapse of society (probably when we hit peak oil).

€1.53 locally for UL, €1.46 for DERV.
The pick-up should do something different to just 27. I refuse to believe otherwise. If I drive the lorry like a granddad, I get nearly 12mpg (last trip comp was 25.2l/100km). Drive like a nutter and it goes below 8mpg. (seen 40l/100km). Difference with a MWB 90PS Transit was 22mpg to 34mpg.
I'd save the t'internet ranting though. If you feel strongly about it then take to the street.
Britain - a lot of moaning and bugger all action.

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
I just filled up.
£1.32 per litre.
£46.63 to top it so there mustve been a bit left in there.
Good news is that I got 49.1 mpgs from the last tank. That'll be a run to Driffield then!

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
I do an occasional MPG check on it and it's pretty consistent 25.5 to 28mpg. Just after Christmas I was quiet with work and I tried to be as efficient as possible. No braking, very very slow acceleration, especially when loaded, turning the engine off when standing for a while etc. Expected 30 but no, 27! Last fill up, fairly quick driving (nothing excessive) normal pace for when I'm busy really...27mpg! Only explanation can be that as 50% of the time or more I'm fully loaded and this irons most of the fluctuation in driving style.macplaxton wrote:€1.53 locally for UL, €1.46 for DERV.

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
Ethanol, more there is that, more car will consume petrol.
I'm doing extreme hypermiling here, also have done few aerodynamic mods to car, it is more quiet at least, but there was lot more wind last time and I was up to 4.6l/100km from 4.4l/100km and I even started to turn motor off at long downhills, sometimes coasting motor off for minute or so, it will be a lot more expensive next year this time, so I have to try to make consumption a lot less.
Granted, I have always over 200kg of equipment needed at work with me, and recent trip was 400km x 2 of steep hills and strong oncoming wind, but still I'm bit of disappointed that could not do better.
I could not even thing about using 300 for anything more than short local trips, few times in a summer, prices are so high.
Last diesel tank was only 61.4MPG, previous was 64.2MPG, those are UK gallons.
Hoping to get a lot more from it, just need do those mods to make car look really stupid
I have been reading a lot from aerodynamics recently, most of my sparetime and I think that I could get even 360 to go with really tiny amount of petrol, but it would mean destroying car pretty much with mods and will not do that, only french crap is enough crap for that

£1.34 litre of unleaded
£58.98 to fill the tank today
I get about 200 mile between full tank and warning light. Viscous coupling fan to be removed in the hope of an extra MPG
LPG could well be a future mod

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
Looks like Australia is cheapest so far at $1.60 (£1.04).
Regarding the the sustainability issue (in a peak oil way rather than environmental way) I'm pretty much in agreement with Ride on. There can only be so much of it down there, and it certainly appears that the oil companies are being forced to use more difficult, environmentally damaging methods of getting at it, suggesting that as it becomes scarce and more expensive, they are prepared to expend more money to get at it (funded by higher oil prices).
I've done an bit of surfing the internet regarding peak oil in the last year or two and it's a minefield of conspiracy theories mixed up with science and a fair amount of politics. I think all you can do is watch what is happening in the world and try to draw conclusions.
History always looks obvious when viewed from the future and you think why didn't someone do something about this or that event at the time, and how did they not see that one coming!
I think that we're probably at peak oil now or will be in the next 5-10 years assuming the developing countries continue to adopt a western thirst for oil. There's lots left in the ground but the important thing is, can it keep up with demand and will those who have it part with it cheaply?
I don't think we're quite at the point of mad max yet, but every time you see a V8, just think, how long before it's the last one you'll hear!

In swansea its 1.29, but 1.37 at home
Im getting pissed off with it, I live in a rural area, I have no choice but to drive. The nearest bus stop is 3 miles away and thats almost as expensive as driving. I am now considerng buying a peice of shit fwd, but I wouldnt know what to do with volvo. I blame it on the torries, becuase im a torrie basher. All the money they get from the taxes should be spent of schemes to encourage people to buy electirc cars or more efficant cars, even gas conversions or hydrogen

Re: Fuel Prices-Highway Robbery morelike
I'm wondering if HDi motor would consume less diesel? My transmission is on it's way out, it would be probably same to install HDi motor, that is if that french things bottom is going to hold up at least one more year.
According to specs it looks like that it would be almost 1l/100km less, but not so sure about that one, I'm fairly positive that I can get to 4l/100km with my current setup in optimal conditions, but to get 3l/100km with HDi, don't know if it really would be possible?
Here any public transportation is going to cost more than driving. Well, depends of course what one drives and how.
