Sand blasting alloy?

Post by theo2468 » 28 Apr 2011 01:36 pm

want to sand blast some alloys I got, but heard if you use to strong sand it will leave dimples in the alloys.
so was wandering if anyone knew the best sand or glass for sandblasting alloy?

Is it just for removing paint? If so then Nitromorse is your friend.

Add a wire brush and sweat for uber-win.

going to use some nitromors first, but the wheels are heavily corroded so sand blaster to get all that off.
and ive never used the sand blaster before so its abit of fun aswell.

Aye, 1 litre tin should be fine. Or whatever size it is for £7/8.

What's the deal then, your dad got a blasting cabinet or do you mean a spot blasting gun? I have a spot blast gun and it's crap TBH.

I've had alloys sandblasted in the past. I was told it would leave the dimples, but I didn't mind and I certainly wasn't going to sand them all! Quite liked the effect when I saw it and it becomes a softer effect with a few layers of paint. Also makes existing scrapes/dents or later scratches/imperfections less noticeable. It also leaves a mark on steels, but this soon goes with a few layers of paint. It does give a nice key for repainting too! Nice alloys those!

Probably depends on the pressure used, just back it off a bit for softer metal. I would use about 100psi for steel and it leaves a matt rough surface perfect for painting. Say 80psi for Al alloy.
