340 1.4 gl

Post by Dan » 02 May 2011 09:44 am

Hey guys pretty new here and although ive spent many months under the bonnet of various 300's, but im looking at 340 gl that is MINT!!! not a spot of rust on the chassis, just a lil under the battery plate, but I can sort that. Main reason im posting this is its SORN atm and thats how its staying for about 2 months, so bar the cam belt and a service is there any upkeep it'll need to keep it running as good as it looks? Im going to jave a proper look in a few hours, ill upload a few pics tonight :-)

i have a dream... a dream of a weekend not spent underneath a car
a weekend when no nuts and bolts are added to my toolbox
no pushing a car home in the rain

one day perhaps my dream will come true

or mabe im just insane

Well bought man.

Should be fine for a few month.
Chock the wheels and leave the handbrake off if you can. Mine started binding after less than 2 month.

Is it a 1.7?
Just 1.4s have a timing chain.......

if its a 1.4 (b14 engine code) the chains are unfunkable so dont mess with it I say.
Just do the filters and fluids when you recomission. Go crazy and do the plugs, leads cap, arm if you like, but if it runs sweet enough, why bother.
Might need some carb fettling if its been off the road a long time, or if its been neglected in the past but I wouldnt expect any probs man. The 1.4s are rarely any hassle.#

Yeah I remember a friends going on and in whilst practically spitting parts if the bore out the side. Sounds good tho, though not sure how ill afford the parts fir the service lol. Oh the carb was swapped for a shiny one about 10k (no idea timewise) ago, so that should be sweet :-) now you've said all this bet it runs like a pile if crap lol

Hey aint been on in forever, just thought id leave an update. First off I lost it, went into major debt and just couldn't afford it, I coulda cried, but having a car I cant use that the dvla would soon take would be silly so I just hope he doesn't scrap it and in a year or so I can hunt it down lol.

Meantime im now going into debt to get my license. The list of things to pay for just never ends!

Still thanks for the help and advice man, appreciate it

1.4 has a chain, but even that needs replacement at times, it starts to rattle and then gears, chain and all is good to replace at once, cost is minimal if done by yourself and it is probably not needed to do more than once during life of engine, but I'm not too sure about that, it is however lot better system than belt, imo.

Adjustment of valves is good to do often, there is mainentance program document in technical section where you can find nice table which tells what one should do and when, it takes bit time to do everything, but my experience is with used vehicles that there is always something not done and first service when buying a car should be everything on list, then car would be known state and after that following regular schedule should be rather effortless, my 343 is going to be first getting this treatment, so can't say that my car servicing has been too good either
