Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
Found a polski fiat that I adore - It's only just come into the country and I have no Idea if I can insure it while it's still polish-registered,
is this possible?
- DVLA once again has no useful information, plenty threats but no information or statement of the actual law that those threats are based on.
I hear you don't need to tax it or register it for 6 months so long as it is registered to someone in poland.
(Going to leave it registered with the old owner till that bit of free tax+test runs out - if so and I'm just borrowing it if I get stopped )
It has 12 months polish MOT.
I'd love to get one over on the dvla - anyone managed this sort of thing??
By the looks of It I just need a willing insurer and the jobs done?

Re: Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
Hmmm it's very very very complicated.
Do any of you know how this rule is enforced "A UK Resident cannot Drive a foreign registered car" - Why?
If it is Insured (they insure the car, not the person in Poland), and owned by a polish person who is "lending" it to me - and the car also has polish MOT in place and is roadworthy and driven properly, what law can plod use to stop me driving it -
Lead me to "A UK Resident cannot Drive a foreign registered car" - Now what is that statement based on? - I can't find anything supporting or refuting this statement and I desperately want to get one over on the DVLA!

Re: Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
My neighbour who has a house in France had a French car (French number plate, left hand drive and bought over there). He drove his back to the UK and had it here for a while before selling it. Don't know about the legal side of it though.

Re: Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
My 340 is an English reg car originally that went to France with an English chap that got it french reg and later sold it to me in France, i drove it in England for over 6months no problems till the 2years of mot ran out (no tax to pay- as this is paid when you get the docs in your name costs around 150euros for life that you own the car) i had it insured in France with axa france, uk driving license etc, some insurance company's will insure it in the uk by chassis number i believe.
the other thing you will find is.. most uk insurance only works for a couple of months in a foreign country but french one's will cover you a year anywhere in Europe, also there is a 6month limit before getting reg changed to country of living but if you say i am on holiday and going back next month they cant do anything.

Hmmm , So.. If you are found to be a uk resident who hasn't been across the channel in AGES, when you are pulled over what have you done wrong?

Bring it over, get it registered at the first station you come to.

Reading FTL. In that case I'm not sure what you're asking. It's either "I want to drive this home" which you'll probably be able to talk yourself out of if you do get pulled or it's "I was to intentionally avoid paying rent by having polish plates for six months" which is wrong, very wrong.

"can I drive it around with no tax, get loads of speeding and parking fines, then scrap it after 6 months of free parking etc"?Speedy88 wrote:Reading FTL. Poles do it.

hit the nail on the head there."can I drive it around with no tax, get loads of speeding and parking fines, then scrap it after 6 months of free parking etc"?
Re: Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
But I want to register it after six months - the law is unclear and going off "If it isn't illegal - you can't get in trouble for it", I need to find a specific law preventing me from "borrowing" a foreign (but road legal) registered car as a uk resident.
I need Mr. Loophole, or lots more coffee.

Re: Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
My motivation Is I parked my motorbike while arranging insurance and received a £270 fine for no tax (tax costs £15), I want it back.
Re: Insuring a Poland registered car in UK..
Hope this is of some help. I want to buy a polish registered car from a person in the UK & was unsure about the insurance aspect so I phoned DVLA today 18/06/12 and was told by very helpful chap in Team 28 at DVLA Tel 0300 790 6802 that a UK resident can Not drive a polish registered car. I explained to him I am English but I live in France and would be taking the car back to France he said in this case it was Ok for me to drive the car but advised me to carry some French utility bills to prove my French residence as if I was stopped by the UK police the car could be confiscated. I was also advised to contact the Motor insurance Bureau 0190 8830001 to check out the proper insurance rules.
