Best way to remove the sound deadening?

Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread, (moderator may move it if necessary)
But I was wondering...
I've taken all the carpet out of my 89 340, and now want to get the sound deadening out. What's the best way to go about doing this?
Somebody said heat it up and use a scraper to get the most of it off, and then use petrol to remove the glue. Is this a good idea?
The only drawback is I don't want the car to then stink of petrol, as I have my MOT coming up and I dont want him to think there is a leak from the fuel tank...
Cheers!
