just remembered you have to drill a hole in a .3 or .4 head for placing it on a '81 year car, for a coolant water hose. 1/8npt threaded, should be easypezy for Mr Mac :D

Yes, there are a couple of differences. One is the coolant hose. You'll also need to swap over the rear plate (water temp sender) and the pump, and removing those can be fun.

I went through pretty much exactly this pain about 2 years ago on my (ex) 1980 345. I ended up putting the original head back on, after repairing a badly stripped spark plug thread (normal insert not large enough). Before this, I fitted one head which turned out to be cracked, and couldn't remove the water pump from another.

In a .3 head you should not have to drill as the hole is already there.
That is by far the easiest head to use for the older engines, just don't forget to adjust the ignition timing (need to look up by how many degrees) to allow for unleaded 98 RON.

98 RON? I would of though adjustment for 95 RON?

As a second option, there is a new arrival at my local Volvo scrapyard (Lakes in Wyboston) which is an E-reg with a 1.4 engine.

It currently has an engine in situ, but the odometer suggests it's done 91k miles. I've never taken an engine apart before, so I don't really know where to start, so would need some pointers if it looks like this is the only viable candidate.

I've found 2 heads.

I don't know my B14's how will I tell what type the heads are?
