Hiya all,
My name is Joe im 25 and i stay at RAF Marham in norfolk. I have just bought a 340 with a 'valver' engine, as i am lead to believe this is there nick name. I bought it off Billkent22, of ebays and hope to pick it up on sunday....I CANT WAIT.!
Here is the link to the build thread he did on here;
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... hp?t=11832
It was bit of a mad decision that led me to buying this! I have also a volvo 940 estate with the 2.3t engine, I took the diff to get welded the other day and the guy fooked it! So i was left with out a car and seen as iv been pondering about getting a smaller car for a while i thought balls to it.....Think of it as a late christmas present from me to me.!!!
Iv got the 940 running at a guess on about 240break, its got some nice mods that i did my self including, big intercooler, 960throttle, better head, fpr, mbc, 740 turbo and astra vxr injectors. I have a s60 turbo to go onto it and just recieved a RSI stage II cam from the states.
Im hoping this little beast will be reliable over the next few months so i can crack on with the 940.
Pleased to meet you all
Joe

Welcome in man.
Valvers are rarely "reliable" in the long run. If the engine and gearbox mounts are all origonal you may find you spin props as the extra torque tears the rubbers unless everything is lined up firmly and accurately.
Pics up!

heres one of the ebay pics, il get more on sunday once iv picked the car up.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... _966wt_934
It says it has got poly engine mounts so hopefully the prop will last for now. is there anything else i need to check for that will effect its reliability?
thanks

If hes used Dais Poly Mounts theyll still be 2mm ish off I think. And should be shimmed.Theres a thread with the details somewhere, but if I were you I'd ask Chris_C. He solved the problem and should be able to offer you vital advice. He know a lot more than me and hes actually worked out the bulletproof fix so drop him a pm?
Other probs depend on whats been used for the conversion really man.
Ecus can be a prob depending on how the looms been spliced.
Underpowered pumps can cause starvation issues.
HGs can go if theyve taken a hammering (or just go anyway.)
Youre in the best position driving it man. Just keep and eye/feel for anything. And
IF you come accross any probs, just post the symptoms and im sure someone will be able to help out. Its a tried and tested conversion so most possible faults have been overcome at some point.
Im begining to realise that everything Ive written is sounds like Im on a bit of a downer on valvers, sorry about that.
I hope you have no probs at all man, loads of people run them well enough, and theyre great fun.
MAOR pics!!!

Haha, you have come accross as bit of a hater of the 'valver' mate! but thats not a problem, i really appreciate you taking the time to let me know what possible faults could occur so hopefully i can iron them out before they happen.
Cheers Mark. I cant wait to drive it and see how it compares speed wise again other cars iv owned.
All my last cars (2 evos, volvo 940, hilux surf and fabia vrs) have been turbo, although i love turbo cars i cant wait to drive a n/a again.

Yeah, sorry about that. The opposite is true in truth. We do see a lot of them come and go on here though.
Im actually in favour of them. Always wanted one but never had the money to buy one, or the space to do the switch.
Been shotgun in/and raced a few. And they are very fast.
Reliable bulletproof valver or 360 2.3t are two of my holy grail cars to have before I die.
Sure youll love it man.

Hah, VND has posted pretty much what I would! He's summed it up nicely.
The F7R is one of the nicest engines I've driven, it has stunning characteristics. My ambition is to have one running as though Volvo had sold it from factory and as yet, none meet that criteria, therefore I also count them as not yet reliable. However, when they are running they are stunning.
Engine mounts, depends what you have on there tbh. Dai used to only sell front mounts so possibly those but if they've been through a catalogue it could be anything. (driftworks guys, do the drift lot have something they use for rear mounts?)
Have a read on my build thread from about here-ish to see how I sorted my alignment
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... &start=345
Dai's mounts are (were? not sure if they have been changed) 3mm to short, which in prop alignment terms is a lot. If you take the rear engine mounts as a pivot point, 3mm low on the front which is about... 450mm? ish away from the rear mounts makes the gearbox end of the propshaft want to be about 10ish mm too high as it's about 1500mm long.
If they arn't Dai's, just get a measuring stick on them and the maths can be done to work it out.

My valver was an absolute blast, really was. I changed due to lack of experience with other cars (I wanted to give something else a go) but nothing has compared so far. I'm REALLY enjoying the uber luxury of a 740 and the stupid miles of a diesel 205 and I can't wait to go and try something else. BL next? Maybe.
I think a valver with strong drivetrain, fuel chip that gives good miles, 940 seats, lowered on coilovers and a nice flowing exhaust is possibly the best car ever for an all-rounder. One day, I'll be back. It's gotta be a hatch this time though. Saloons are stupidly small for carrying anything.
Be wary of the valver engines though, they aren't "reliable" in the sense that you'll probably have to start replacing some parts at some point if you do something like 20k a year. However saying that, they are extremely easy to work on when sitting in the Volvo engine bay.
