Axle bouncing

Post by deleted » 19 Jun 2005 11:11 am

Sometimes in the wet, i cant accelerate, there is this really bad bit of road at a traffic light up a hill, the tar is all cut away in slits, and it must sort of puddle up. let the clutch out slooow and my wheels spin up, bam bma bma bam.

which brings me to my real question.

What the hell is with the axle bouncing?

sayif i let the clutch out with lots of revs, the wheels will spin up for the first bit.

If i let it out without as much (these are flooring it) the wheel(s) will spin but only because the rear of the car is bouncing up and down, going Bam BAM BAM BAM.

is this supposed to happen ?

for instance, inm the wet a while back, i was spinning it in 2nd and then into 3rd, and holding it through third, then it sort of starts losing that spinning power and BAM BAM BAM BAM it bounces the rear for the last of it.

not that i go around thrashin my car all the time.

(i imagine it is bouncing the rear, that is what it feels/sounds like.

Ive been driving for ages now, when i first got my licencse i wanted to spin it up, but couldnt, and tried to drive hard /be a hoon. to a degree...
get sideways etc
justlearning..

then i got past all that and drove sensibly most of the time (245 era) didnt try to get sideways, car wouldnt spin it up anyway (auto).

since getting the 360, its like being a new driver again.

every now and then i just like to see what it will do.

and having driven autos all these years im not used to manual fast takeoffs.

anyway, hopefully i will soon stop this.

im thinking this axle bounce might be what is loosening my axle nuits or somthing.

First thing I would check is shocks if the shocks are knackered the rear is going to bounce like a juiced pimp mobile. If the axle nuts are coming loose use thread lock on the bolts that should help to stop them from shaking loose. Once you have decent shocks/dampers and it still does it try putting lead weights or cement bags in! Hope this helps

Rear shocks?

I have rather new rearshocks and it still does it, however those are not very good shocks.

Then there is one linkage, it keeps rearaxle at place but it is only in other side, I don't know what it is called in english. One finnish word for it is reaktiotanko, maybe Fuse or some other finn knows the word :)

Anyways, adding another one could help, also installing anti roll bar could make it bit better too.

its called axle tramp - its the torque actually bending the leaf spring and when it springs back it then causes it it jump. loads of things can cause it,old bushes etc. it can put major stress on drive shaft/transmission so be carefull.

Yes, those that keep rearaxle at where it should be, I recall that in 360 there is only one of those, that makes rear end to pull right when accelerating, like old US cars.

given that this is quite an issue (i takea it, it doesnt happen to everyones 300's??) what can i do to find what is causing it, i thought the shocks were ok.. but they might need replacing. I really do not want any MORE major problems going on this car, every month/month and 1/2 it is off the road for repairs!!!

Thanks

Are the wheels actually bouncing or is there just very bad vibration in the back?

here is a quote from a site i found;

1.Weak, factory rubber bushings are often common culprits that contribute to axle tramp. Mushy bushings allow the rear axle to move in every direction imaginable, which is never conducive to traction. Stronger bushings, such as polyurethane and Polygraphite bushings, offer freedom of movement yet limit bushing deflection when power is applied.

it also says lowering will reduce the tramp !!??

my road car just sets 1 of the tyres on fire
