Ovlov 340 from Portugal (1st post is 56k killer)

Post by Rubenv340 » 16 Sep 2012 06:22 pm

Hi there :D
My name is Ruben, 19y and i'm from Portugal.
I recently bought my Volvo 340 DL and i am very happy with it. It's my first car, first rwd and the start of everything.
It's not in the best condition as body and paint, but the engine looks fine, needs spark plugs, air filter, changing oil and tuning the carburator. Will do tomorrow.

It's a 1400cc 70hp from Renault with the rusty exhaust, so as it's broken, it makes a v8 muscle sound haha :D will fix as soon as possible.
It will be for restoration as fast as i can get spare money to start working on it.. Besides of that, it's my Daily car and my Rain Drifter :)
I bought the car already with the LPG system, which rocks :D
The interior is awesome and in very good shape, very confortable car.

The insurance price was 88€ year. Classic :P

I made a list of important things to change / fix.

- Replace engine mounts (Urgent)
- Repair exhaust line
- Switch front tyres to rear (the rear ones are new, the front are bad)
- Tune carburator
- Tune idle
- Change spark plugs
- Change air filter
- Tune ebrake
- Change clutch (it slips a bit)
- Change oil and filter
- General interior repairs (some plastic things broken).
- Repair all the body rust (Long way)
- Remove the side rubber things (in the door), don't know the name
- Fix the bumpers position
- Smoke taillights
- Paint the interior of the front grill in flat black, keep the external in chrome
- Paint the car black

NOW!! The pics. I took a pic of everything that is broken/needs replacement.

Nevermind the driver's door, i got one already to replace.

Hi and welcome!

Well done on the insurance, cheapest I've seen. Mines about £100 (125 euro)for the 360 on classic and limited mileage, same again for rthe 1.7 340 I have.

Looks like a few bits of work need doing but not too bad.

Are there many 300's left over there? I don't know if they sold a lot there anyway?

Thank you guys.
I have this insurance because i'm a partner of a classic cars club, so they have a protocol with an insurance company :P awesome stuff. And i don't have limited mileage.

It's quite rare to see volvo 300 here, specially sedan. I managed to found a 340 sedan also with LPG in my ex-city, haha crazy.

Guys, where to find engine mounts? Mine are in bad shape, the engines shakes a lot really and thats bad.
I found a topic with some poliuretane for sale, is that the enough to replace ?

Thanks

Hey Ruben,
Congratulations with your 340.

I would not turn the front tyres to the back; as the car is rear wheel drive you want to keep the best road holding tyres on the back.

We can most certainly help you with some, maybe all, of the stuff you need.
A couple of forum members (a.o Mac, Dai and myself) started a few years back reproducing parts.
Others have hoarded new and second hand bits.
Under my project name "Born Built Beauties" you can get the doorhandle seals (rubber bits between the doorhandle and the doorskin) for the doors and the bootlid.
I can also supply you the engine mounting rubbers (front) NOS (new old stock).
You can PM me for the details and if you send me your email adress I'll send you the BBB parts catalogue.

Sorry for the lack of updates.. Been busy with some sort of things.

I've done a couple of things already.. not much, money is short at the moment.

- New exhaust pipe from downpipe to the final part, removing the middle silencer. All straight with final silencer, great sound. All made in 45mm with a wider tube in the place of the old silencer to create backpressure.
- New Sparkplugs
- Air filter, oil filter, engine oil.
- Painted the bumpers in black and put the rear in position, zipties power. Now need to do it in the front one. Is just me or the SIDE bumper mounts sucks balls?? I hate them, i broke them all...
- Front grill black
- Inner part of the headlights black (forgot the piece of chrome around the reflector, will paint it soon).

Also got some new 14" steelies to drift. Superb tyres at the front, usual at rear, awesome handling.. 13" for daily.

Removed everything related to the spare tire in the engine bay, much better now, CLEAN!

Next step is removing the alarm, since it doesnt work.

Can someone tell me whats this box?

Overall.. The 14 wheels suits a lot better... maybe i'll change my mind when i lower the car and put some decent tyres in them... i have 175-70-13

The wheels (Colour is obviously temporary :D)

Close, but no Uncle Ben's  . I suppose you could argue it relies on an ignition signal to function, but it's also tied to the fuel system, so really a bit of both. It's the MY87> fuel cut-off relay. If engine is doing more than certain rpm (I think it's 1600rpm for a B14, check green book) and the throttle is closed, then the box will ensure that the idle solenoid on the carb is shut too, to save petrol.

So it is in essense as speed sensing relay and similar inside to the CVT tacho relay.

thats a gizmo that switches off the idle solenoid under some circumstances, in effect you get a slightly better (it is noticable) fuel economy
for the relay to switch of the idle solenoid engine has to be above 1800rpm and you need to have your foot completely off the gaspedal; in other words it cuts off the solenoid when slowing down/braking and as soon as you touch the throttle again or get below 1800rpm it turns the solenoid back on to prevent the engine from stalling

Oh thats cool :P

I got a " problem " today. When i was going to run off with that, i turned the car, everything cool, and 2 secs after, no battery at all... It all switched off... Strange.. i start seeying what could be, any cable or something, i just pushed the case (the thing protecting the battery connection), the positive one, and pulled it again to its position, and i got battery again... What can be? Bad contact with the cables or major battery problem? Maybe water?

Another problem (already had this one)... the car have much difficult to start up at gasoline... i guess the fuel pump needs a swap for a new one?

My gears are not that " easy " to engage, the 1st and 2nd can be a little painfull to do... what can it be?
Since the car is from 87, i guess the Valvoline and the diff oil was never changed... Should i?

Thank you all for the help :)

1) I suspect that the problem was just poor connection on the batery if a wiggle on teh cables sorted it

2) I always use the choke, press throttle pedal twice then turn the key. That comes from experiance with much older cars.

3) If both 1st and 2nd are hard to engange it could be the reverse stop needs adjusting. If you lift the gear lever cover you will see the stop.

It is worth giving the car a full service, all ignition system and lubricants inc diff oil gearbox oil and grease hindges etc.

Thanks.
I use the choke too, and i do that, twice or three times pressing the pedal, but still not starting.. Takes really a looooooooot of time.
I'll have a look at the gear stops.
I see, of course the best choice would be giving the car to a mechanic and ask for a full service, and i won't really like that... I don't know, it's my idea.. I like to do it all by myself.. searching by me, testing and tryin it, but of course, i don't know all the places that usually needs grease.
I will take a look in the internet for car service maintenance " tutorials ", to find spots i don't know what to do.

Thank you.
