Still not convinced that more than 5% of 90s stuff will ever be 'classic', or even interesting autoshite, convince me..... :P

Isn't that the point (or at least by the late 90s) where they all start really looking the same, even Volvos ?

Something to do with efficiency, cost and safety standards?

Bit of a cheeky thread hijack but lets play forcast future autoshite/classics......

Go for it. In a way, I think some stuff will just remain shit and bland but take a mk1 focus for example - the styling was very unique at the time and they're already diminishing in numbers! Give it 30 years and they'll be as desirable as a 4 door mk2 escort is now. Back then they were just crappy standard cars but not now.

Remember that 300s were never regarded that highly nor did they achieve styling awards but look at the way they're getting popular now...

I have a rough rule... the sign of a future classic is if it rusts away. Rotten cars = = rarer = desireable

I have to agree with Andy though - there are very few interesting cars from the 90's onwards, obviously there are exceptions and Ford's in general always get a good following. But given that cars last a lot longer nowadays it's gonna take a lot longer for something to be considered a classic. 150-300k miles is not unusual for the longevity of cars within the last 15 years whereas 70's and 80's cars in general would fall apart by 100k (again, obviously exceptions!)

What a honey! Reminds me of how popular Mitsubishi cars once used to be, whereas now it is the worst selling Japanese brand in Europe...

I've always wondered why Mitsubishi refrained from using its own name in the UK from the start.

I remember about 1992ish, while I was buzzing up and down the A1 to various colleges (in my 13 year old Mk1 vario), thinking...

What will make a good rat car in 15 years time?

I was passed by a brand new one of these:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/7430965@N05/7902805670/

It was black with darkish rear lights a bit like this that one /\

Now 20 years on  Here we are....they are almost extinct.

I didn't like the front end then...still don't now. Has a quaint look about it now but classic in 5 years? Another 20 maybe

This I like...

Co-worker had once this kind of car in two door form, I think he had it for two weeks which is more than twice the time he had most of his cars at that time...

I wondered if it was! I'd tried to find celica models and came up with that image but without the RA 71 bit so I wasn't sure.

Amazing how good they were with copying the American styling and getting the proportions right.

The best that manufactures do today it give a 'hint' at they styles of the 60's/70's when they do these 'retro' cars.

There are few bold designs today such as this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Cube
Not saying it's a brilliant car...just bold and individual.

Most new cars are just mismatched curvy lines and shapes at odds with the general shapes of the rest of the car as far as I can see.

I'll pick on a well known luxury brand rather than a cheap jibe at a lower end runabout.

I'm sure a wonderfully engineered car but sorry BMW fans, this kind of thing blends into the background to me, put it in a line of wonderfully engineered washing machines and you'd find it hard to spot the car if it wasn't for the grill and badge.

I won't post this here beyond this as this isn't really Volvo content.

This week I've gotten her through an MOT meaning the 360 is coming off the road for a bit. Any more updates will be at the below link but for now I'll just leave you with some pictures of the day I picked her up:
