New Daily - D5 Content
Well my trusty V40 T4 has gone to a new home and due to increased mileage I decided to jump ship and buy a tractor. In actual fact I'm pretty chuffed with it, as it drives really rather nice. Has just had a clutch, flywheel and clutch slave cylinder 6 months ago. It's an S60 D5 SE and in some ways reminds me more of my S70 compared the V40 in terms of build On Friday it also managed to get me home 20 miles in pretty shocking conditions without issue on regular tyres, having avoided many Jag and BMW drivers

Hi Steve.
Nice motor. My sister used to have one of those.
She always regretted selling it on.
Cheers Mark.

Thanks guys - I'll get a fuelly on the go at some point, I've only put fuel in it once so far and didn't record the mileage. The trip computer tells porkie pies but it's probably only about 5-10% out

Id be interested to follow this becuase I assume you dont drive like a grandma? Im seroiusly looking at getting a D5 in the next few months, but when I see tidy v70r (850) for much less money its awfully temptingSteveP wrote:Thanks guys - I'll get a fuelly on the go at some point, I've only put fuel in it once so far and didn't record the mileage. Far from it, but a lot of the times conditions on the M6 mean a 60mph cruise! I reckon it's doing about 45mpg at the moment.
It is worth noting however there are huge differences in economy comparing the Euro 3 and Euro 4 engines (the latter is much less economical). Ideally I wanted a 2004/early 2005 facelift model but with the Euro 3 163bhp engine - but this came up at the right time, price and with the key expensive components that fail replace, so it was a no brainer. If you do a fair few miles I'm not sure the performance difference is quite enough to warrant the near double the amount of fuel you'll need to keep a T5/R going. Ofcourse the T5/R's are a fair bit quicker, but only once you wind them up. The 'initial' responsiveness of the D5 from very low RPM is impressive. Plus, if you really do want more power a remap to 200bhp/400nm makes things much, much closer - as testified by this video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5pEAWvKwYs
At the end of the day it really depends on your mileage, if you're doing less than 15k a year I probably wouldn't bother given the potentially expensive issues that can arise. Main thing I would suggest is checking whether it's had a replacement Dual Mass Flywheel/Clutch/Slave Cylinder at some point

Re: New Daily - D5 Content
Great Choice Steve! I miss my S60 dearly... the level of kit on the SE is really good too!
I would like another one day (may replace the Golf next year if something decent comes up, and insurance is ok...) will definitely go D5 next time though, as I love my diesel golf for the economy...
Enjoy it!
Matt.

Re: New Daily - D5 Content
Steve, are the euro 4 engines 185bhp? Dad has that one but remaped to 205bhp and 450nm, it f*cking files along! but he doesnt get very good economy perhaps 40mpg max. Thanks for the advice!
Re: New Daily - D5 Content
I had looked at Golf's/Octavia's/A3's and the like, for their economy - but I just couldn't justify it when comparing it to the S60, especially as they were potentially more expensive to purchase in the first place. It also "only" has the 'high performance' audio and it sounds great for a factory setup.
They did the Euro 4 engine in 185bhp and the 163bhp (I think badged as the 2.4D, although there is some confusion over this!)

D5s are the best Diesel engine about in my opinion! Our v70 on a run gets 55mpg easily, and when you need the power it's there! Also so much torque!

I probably should have specified ladies legs in there too. [+=] "embarrarrased emoticon"[].com
