Possible to swap transmission?

Post by williswoody » 19 Feb 2013 02:41 am

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering, theoretically of course, would it be possible to swap the Manual transmission out of a 360 GLT and replace it with an Automatic transmission from a 340 of the same year? I am in Australia, and we only have the '84 Manual 360 model down here, but do you think it would be possible to get a transmission shipped from the UK from a 340 and install it in?

I know it would be a major pain in the ass and would probably not be worth it... but what do you reckon?

Or would it be possible to install an automatic transmission from a later model, like an '87 or something, I'm pretty sure we have those in automatic down here in Australia :)

Cheers.

Well, my mechanic told me it was an '85 model, but they always manufacture vehicles the year before, or something? On the rego sticker it says 84 :S

So maybe it is an '85 haha.

In the 4 years I've been watching 360's I've only ever seen one 85 and nothing older turn up on trademe. I've only had 86-89.

I don't think that it will be possible to do that.
It may be possible to fit but the CVT will not be able to handle the power...

Would it struggle with the torque or hp? eg would it be fine if you cruised with it and didn't kick it up the arse?

If you really want an auto, just import a complete vehicle. It'd be cheaper than trying to make something that isn't designed to fit together fit.

nope, the redblock has too much torque and will break it; you'll have to ship a container full of cvt's in so that if you get everything working you can change the belts/gearboxes at every small service

Yep. Why go from a relatively robust drivetrain to one that when you break a propshaft in half - and you will -contains actual caramel?
