Volvo 242 powered by T5 in the UK....

....well pulled by a T5 at least:rofl:
On sunday i took the trip up to see Griz and pick up the 242 he has had for the last few years.
I don't think any of us were expecting much when we took the tarpaulin off to reveal what lurked beneath. But to our surprise the car hadn't really got any worse.

I will be putting this back on the road after a full rebuild rust repair, on the face of it it needs inner & outer sills & back arches, then lots of local repairs in various places but i am pleased with what i have to start with.

Im pretty sure the car will be getting a 6Cyl whiteblock just not entirely sure which yet.
At the moment the project is just mothballed as i want the 340 done, but i wanted to pick the car up and put it in dry storage, (Currently in a unit with two 850R estates).

The day of pickup...
Started off taking up 6 spaces in mcdonalds car park, as you do. Next some snowy scenery in Brecon. Followed by the 242 in all her glory....

The 242 has been stood for a good few years and we were not too sure how much hassle it would be to retrieve from her nearly muddy grave.
But after finding keys we got in and the steering still worked, i took the handbrake off and low and behold with a big push the car tried to roll. After digging the rear tyres out we realized they were flat and the axle was dragging on the mud. Pumped tyres up and rolled straight out. Rolled through the lovely scenery of a National park aka grizs back garden and up onto the trailer for the journey home.

Im after any info anyone may have on this car, the UK reg is BMO 925T and after deciphering the vin no turned out the following.

Original spec was

1979
242
Built in Goteburg
B21
Fuel injected
Catalytic converter
DL model
Without sunroof
AW55 Aisin Warner Gearbox
Left Hand Drive
California Market.....

Thanks Griz will keep all informed with progress.
Adam

Nice one bud!

Why not, in the short term, stick a generic "easy" redblock in (carb and points or carb and renix) and put an MOT on it. That way it'll be rolling when you do the swap.

Never seen a 242 before, is it the same overall size as a 244?

I didn't think these came out it anything other than 242GT. when you consider my grandfather has owned all 3 GT's that are in the north island (has two now), and no other 242's, you could see how i would think that

Those lights and grill are 1979? I know very little about other Volvos to be honest but I thought they were later, maybe 1st year of that style then? Somehow it looks wrong with the T reg, must be only one I've seen like that.

Great find, only ever remeber seeing one, ours games teacher at school had a metallic blue 262 in the 80's, I think it might have even been a Bertone

The front end is 1981/82 spec. A 79 would have round lights or if late the square lamps, the indicators would also be the early ones on that age.

A 79 would look like this

My dad has a 242 DL they did come in most specs. I think the GT was the most popular 240 is Aus. Base model cars are the best to start with for a build imo

No at some point in it's life, probably when converted to rhd it hD the later front and rear light fitted and a later tailgate. I'm not going to restore to original spec but will be using a mix of what I think are the best features from different years.
Starting with ditching the later bootlid for a nice flat early spec one.
The front end will look like the dealer touring cars looked.

Hi Adam.
A mate of mine bought a 245 witch had been living under a tree for many years.
It was blue but had turned green because of the tree  . He went home, collected a battery,
put it into the car and drove it home. Pure class. :D :D
Good luck with the car.
Cheers Mark.

Great find Adam. Looks good. Planning on going back to earlier headlights? Glad to see you're putting the 850 to good use!

Good to see the 242 finally rescued. It doesn't really look any worse then when I last saw it. IMO that's the best front end, just needs the flat bootlid. What colour are you thinking? :)

Volvo Rebel blue aka polestar blue. It will be same body spec as the touring car, so early bootlid group A wing and egg crate front end.
