Well it isnae a Perodua Nippa...It's a MY82 Volvo 245 GLT Estate with waft-o-matic.S10NPH wrote:Any guesses what I might have bought?
Did Stevie Wonder do the last MOT? And while we're at it, ditch that non-period high level brake light.
Re: Non 300 content inside
Top marks, although I can't help but think that your level of detail was garnered by looking at the other images in my photobucket and looking it up on the Doovla website rather than the picture I posted up
Anyway, you are correct. I hadn't realised before that Stevie Wonder as an aside to his successful music career also ran a small MOT testing station in north London. As well as passing MOTs, he also does some rather shonky looking welding.
I agree about the high level brake light, although to remove it altogether I would need replacement tailgate glass, as the black surround for it I believe is etched onto the glass.

Well I knew it was a GLT and I guessed it was of a 200 series variety. Then I just had to look...S10NPH wrote:Top marks, although I can't help but think that your level of detail was garnered by looking at the other images in my photobucket and looking it up on the Doovla website rather than the picture I posted up
Yeah, he used to run it with Ray Charles.S10NPH wrote:I hadn't realised before that Stevie Wonder as an aside to his successful music career also ran a small MOT testing station in north London. As well as passing MOTs, he also does some rather shonky looking welding.
So it's had a replacement window at some point of the later variety?S10NPH wrote:I agree about the high level brake light, although to remove it altogether I would need replacement tailgate glass, as the black surround for it I believe is etched onto the glass.
Lovely luxobarge and something that would be a mere 56 yoyos a year to tax here. Would be a bit of effort to get it through a NCT though.

Re: Non 300 content inside
It's had a resprayed tailgate at some point, or a replacement tailgate as the badges are in the wrong place.
I'm trying to work out if that's a 140bhp H cam'd engine or the later 136bhp K cam'd one. '80/'81MY cars had the H cam, and some of the '82MY ones came with it. '83MY's (as far as I can tell) all had the K cam.

Terms and conditions apply. This post may go down as well as up. Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Hard hats to be worn. No reversing without a banksman. No admittance to unauthorized persons. Stop that. Put that down. Leave that alone.
Re: Non 300 content inside
Yes, it's had a brand new tailgate about 10 years ago apparently. It's therefore completely rust free. Don't worry, the badges are being moved tomorrow, I can't cope with them where they are!V6 Man wrote:It's had a resprayed tailgate at some point, or a replacement tailgate as the badges are in the wrong place.

It's a 136bhp engine B23E, so it's the later version.

Not sure whether to be more shocked at the rust or the welding
Love the look of the thing though, by far the best front end on a 200.

Re: Non 300 content inside
Nice age car but in pretty bad shape. Not the worst I have seen but it going to need a lot of substantial welding
The stuff that is clearly visable
Sills
wheel arches
wheel wells
rear wings around the windows ( I would change to the later windows as teh seals are better and are a lot less rust prone)
What you can not see but will most likely be rotten
metal work behind teh rear bumper
Floor pan where they meet the sills
Rust in the pilars?
I've seen pigeons poo that looks more like welding than the blobs that are on teh sills.
I have a fairly decent red shell that would be a much better start than welding that one up!
I really do like they early GLT's and they did get all the best parts

Re: Non 300 content inside
I took the car to an exhaust centre to get a blow sorted on Saturday, and took the opportunity to have a good look underneath whilst it was on the ramp. The metal in front of the rear bumper is surprisingly solid: my friend has a G-reg which has a fairly non-existent rear valance.
The rest of the underside looks pretty good too. It looks like the NS sill is the only welding the car's had, and that was only in 2013. It's solid, but extremely untidy. I think it will have to be re-done whilst the rust on the C pillar/wheelarch there is repaired.
The A and B pillars seem solid, but I haven't yet had the trim off on the A pillars to check thoroughly.
The spare wheel wells look a lot worse than they are I think, as when looking from the inside there is (currently) only one area where it has rusted through. I will have to strip all the underseal from the area to have a proper look.
I want to repair the rust under the rear window fairly quickly so that it doesn't leak. I'll need to take the window out to do a proper job - any advice as to the best way of going about it?
When playing with the mechanical bits over the weekend, I noticed a leaky water pump and the radiator is almost entirely rotten, there is almost no core left, and I can't understand how it's not actually leaking. It's certainly not cooling. The thermostat is also dead, I'm pretty certain. I have ordered all the nice new shiny parts, so hope to replace them this weekend.
I know this is the wrong forum to discuss this car, but this is my favourite forum and we're a pretty small and friendly community!
Have a few more pictures for fun (MacP, I can't work out how to tile these as thumbnails in the way you have):

Correctly re-badged - this was obviously the most important job on the car:

Looking shiny in the work car park:
Fuel sender, not as bad as some I've seen, though in-tank pump has of course failed as always:
Some pics of underneath
This is the worst bit on the rear valance:

Re: Non 300 content inside
To remove the rear windows I just use two screw drivers to feed the rubber over the lip.
I would suggest changing them for ones from a later car as the seal is a lot better and the late cars do not suffer with rust the same. You might find much of the metal hidden by the rubber is very rusty is disintergrated.
When refitting you should use sealant on the rubber, it should be a flexible type one
The rest of it does not look that bad to be fair

I can't remember, but it wasn't quite straight forward. I'll look back at my post and see how I done it!S10NPH wrote:(MacP, I can't work out how to tile these as thumbnails in the way you have)
Okay, I've compared. It was quite straight-forward
Take your BBCode link exactly as you have posted it, but sneak in the "th_" into the image URL for the "th"umbnail. If you want them on the same line, then leave no spaces between each complete batch of code. I've left done a carriage return after every four. (Ignore the space after the initial open square bracket, it's there to stop it parsing (and using "Code" would show up my formatting of the th_ )

Re: Non 300 content inside
Good to see it's only really the recent welding that's suspect. Looks like you have a pretty long term oil leak there, at least the engine bay is probably free from rust Great looking car though, lots of potential. Reminds me of a similarly aged 244 Turbo I saw in Menorca a few years ago - I'll have to dig a picture out
