I think I may have found my problem.

The square thing that looks like a clamp at the front of the prop has been welded to the prop and the shaft coming out of the front bellhousing...

It is a clamp and needs to worked on by the book, otherwise the driveshaft will be ruined, as many are. No doubt you will have heard that the mountings (engine and gearbox/diff) are important too.
